There are a lot of great base locations on The Island in Ark Survival Ascended. In this guide, I’m gonna highlight a few of the best locations for bases I’ve found via research that are good for both PvP and PvE.
The developers have changed a few of The Island’s map features from Ark Survival Evolved, and they have removed a lot of Tech items and Cryopods for now, which gives us more freedom when looking for the best base locations in Ark Survival Ascended for PvP and PvE.

Best place to build a base on The Island in Ark Survival Ascended
While cave bases will likely still reign supreme in PvP, since Ark Survival Ascended is reverting back to its original meta, there are several viable spots for outside bases. This guide will feature several great base locations on The Island in Ark Survival Ascended and it’s up to you to decide where you want to build.
The Dead Island Carno Cave
- Longitude: 90.7
- Latitude: 10.3
This base location is dubbed Carno Cave and it’s located on The Dead Island which is the small island in the northeast part of the map. The cave entrance is located on the eastern side of the island and it’s facing east.
Carno Cave is extremely spacious vertically, has an underwater entrance, and is easily defendable. In my opinion, this is going to be the most contended PvP base spot as it’s that good. There are a lot of carnivorous enemies defending the cave which means it’ll be a bit difficult to clear out and claim as your own. However, Carno Cave is one of the best base spots on The Island so it’s worth the fight.
The Southern Shores Lava Cave
- Longitude: 93.1
- Latitude: 75
The Lava Cave is found in the alcove on the southeastern tip of The Southern Shores. The cave entrance is easily found along the wall of the alcove.
What makes the Lava Cave great is that the alcove makes for a fun and easily defendable outdoor base, the cave entrance is narrow, and the lava inside is cool and works as bonus protection. It’s very spacious inside the cave so there’s a lot of room to expand and do whatever you’d like. The Lava Cave location works great for both PvP and PvE.
The Whitesky Peak Ice Cave
- Longitude: 13.8
- Latitude: 13.5
There are many ice caves on The Island, but the Ice Cave is on the north alcove of The Whitesky Peak which is found at the northwest part of the map. Walk down the path and you’ll find the cave facing the watery alcove.
What makes this Ice Cave so amazing in Ark Survival Ascended is it requires you to crouch to get in which limits the dinos that can get in and makes it very defendable. There used to be many other ice caves that had crouched entrances but many of them have been changed. This is one of the last crouch entrance caves which makes it a great base location. It’s not the most spacious location, but it is one of the easiest to defend.
The Frozen Tooth Moutain

- Latitude: 58.8
The Frozen Tooth mountain base is located directly on The Frozen Tooth mountaintop which is slightly northeast of the center of the map. This base is outside.
What makes The Frozen Tooth a great base location is it has a ton of resources on it which you can quickly harvest and store and it’s extremely defendable on all sides since it has the height advantage. The only issue with this base is an attack from the air, but if you prepare for that, The Frozen Tooth mountain base is really solid.

The Western Approach Plateau
- Longitude: 10.7
- Latitude: 49.3
If you’re looking for a decent beginner-friendly place to build a base on The Island in Ark Survival Ascended, the plateau jutting west out of The Western Approach is a great option.
With this spot, you can defend the coast since you’re on the cliff and also utilize it for water dinos and there are a lot of basic resources around. While it isn’t as well sheltered or defendable as other bases, this base is excellent for a chill PvE experience.
Far’s Peak Mountain

- Latitude: 30
The mountaintop on Far’s Peak, which is the mountain in the northeast section of The Island, is a really solid base location.
Far’s Peak is very similar to The Frozen Tooth, but it’s less central which could be good but closer to The Dead Island which could be bad. Overall, it’s just as good as The Frozen Tooth as it’s rich with resources and easily defendable.
The Southern Islets Stonehenge
- Longitude: 56.3
- Latitude: 87.3
Last but not least, this area commonly referred to as Stonehenge on The Island is a great base spot for PvP and PvE. Stonehenge is located on the southern tip of The Souther Islets.
Stonehenge is great because its jagged mountains with flat tops make for a very unique and interesting place to build a base around. Not only that, but it features a defendable pool for water dino breeding. It’s not the best PvP location on the list, but it sure makes for a fun PvE spot.
