Sorcerers are incredibly powerful magic wielders in Baldur’s Gate 3 that have magical power from birth. Sorcerers are my favorite spellcaster class because of their powerful spells and Metamagic.

The best Sorcerer in Baldur’s Gate 3 is the Draconic Bloodline Sorcerer who is a Wood Half-Elf with a Guild Artisan background. The Draconic Bloodline subclass is the best choice because it gives you extra armor and abilities. Storm Sorcery is powerful, but a bit limiting, and Wild Magic is too unpredictable, which can be a lot of fun, but most certainly isn’t the best.

Sorcerers use Charisma as their spellcasting modifier, so the higher the charisma, the better. Wood Half-Elf is the best class because it gives you +2 Charisma as well as some other useful abilities and Guild Artisan is my personal favorite for this build because you get proficiencies in Insight and Persuasion, but pick virtually any background you’d like for your specific character.

Best early Sorcerer spells and cantrips in Baldur’s Gate 3

With the base Sorcerer stuff out of the way, what are the best starter Sorcerer spells in Baldur’s Gate 3? When you start out, Sorcerers only get four level-one spells and two cantrips. If you want the best early Sorcerer spells, here is what you should go with.

  • Spells
    • Magic Missile
    • Chromatic Orb
    • Sleep
    • Thunderwave
  • Cantrips
    • Fire Bolt
    • Ray of Frost
    • Acid Splash

To begin, you want Magic Missile and Chromatic Orb. Magic Missile allows you to hit three separate targets and Chromatic Orb deals random elemental damage, but a lot of it. These are the two strongest DPS spells for a Sorcerer to start with. Magic Missile is incredibly good at any level because it can’t be countered; it always deals damage.

Sleep is one of the best spells in the game, so picking that in the beginning is wise. Sleep completely incapacitates your enemies. It can be cast on multiple enemies as long as they are below a certain hit point. Thunderwave is great if enemies are right in front of you because it deals good AoE damage and you can send enemies flying off cliffs. With these four spells, you’ll have something for every occasion.

For cantrips, Fire Bolt, Ray of Frost, and Acid Splash are the best options. Fire Bolt and Ray of Frost speak for themselves, but Acid Splash works well as an AoE attack. All of these cantrips are used as DPS, but feel free to select Mage Hand or Friends if you want some utility cantrips to use outside of battle. I like building my Sorcerer as a strong single-target and AoE DPS spellcaster.

Best endgame Sorcerer spells and cantrips in Baldur’s Gate 3

In Baldur’s Gate 3, the max level is level 12. As you work your way toward an endgame Sorcerer, here are the best spells and cantrips to keep in mind.

  • Spells
    • Misty Step
    • Wall of Fire
    • Chain Lightning
    • Disintegrate
    • Globe of Invulnerability
    • Polymorph
  • Cantrips
    • True Strike
    • Blade Ward

The best damage spells for endgame Sorcerer are Wall of Fire, Chain Lightning, and Disintegrate. These are level five and six spells that completely decimate your targets in one way or another. Wall of Fire can block specific areas, Chain Lightning deals high chaining damage, and Disintegrate deals the highest single-target damage in BG3.

Misty Step is a great endgame spell to have because it allows you to get out of sticky situations, gain superior positioning, and travel the open world with ease. Lastly, Polymorph is crazy powerful to turn the hardest enemies into harmless sheep, and Globe of Invulnerability can help your party stay alive for much longer.

If you missed them in the past, the best cantrips to get going forward are True Stike and Blade Ward. Neither of these cantrips deal damage, but they do help you deal more damage and take less. It’s not your main position to offer support, but it’s not bad to have the options.

Best Metamagic Sorcerer spells in Baldur’s Gate 3

At level two and beyond, you’ll be able to pick Metamagic, a feature exclusive to Sorcerers. Metamagic makes your spells do cool things like deploy twice and have longer ranges. Here are the best Metamagic options for Sorcerers in Baldur’s Gate 3.

  • Twinned Spells
  • Quickened Spell
  • Distant Spell

Twinned Spell is the best Metamagic for Sorcerers because it allows you to have two targets instead of spells that only have one. This allows you to deal much more damage.

Quickened Spell is the next best as it allows your spells that take an action to instead take a bonus action. This allows you to perform more abilities in your turn. Lastly, Distant Spell makes your spells have 50% more range which is useful.

Sorcerers are a lot of fun in Baldur’s Gate 3. If you really want to try something different, you should look into making a Reverberation build.
