Helldivers 2 has brought it’s traditional top-down alien slaying mayhem to a much more personal third-person gore fest. The game is switching up its playstyle, but it still has a very heavy multiplayer focus. With its live service model, will Helldivers 2 have a campaign as well?
Helldivers 2 campaign mode
The team at Arrowhead Game Studios have decided to focus entirely on their online multiplayer gameplay for Helldivers 2, leaving out a traditional campaign. However, that doesn’t mean there isn’t still a form of progression and conquest to take part in. Rather than solely conquering the many worlds, Helldivers 2 lets you take part in an online wide campaign for domination.
As interviews with the developers state, this game is going to work alongside the live service model. As players progress through the online missions, they work together to push back the alien purge. So, although there isn’t a single or multiplayer campaign to speak of, there is a collective one. Similar to games like Destiny 2, there are group goals to work towards.
As the game progresses, the team at Arrowhead Game Studios plans to introduce new elements and situations to the collective Helldivers 2 campaign. New enemies, galaxy events, and challenges will be added to the mix to keep it all fresh. I expect to see some exciting developments over Super Earth as the team works to keep the game fresh.
So, no single-player campaign
If you’re looking for a story-driven, single or multiplayer option to play offline, then Helldivers 2 won’t provide it. Like a lot of Live Service games, this one is choosing to tell its story through online events and constantly developing missions. I am not usually a fan of a full-priced game released as an online-only, multiplayer-only title, but Helldivers 2 is not that. Unlike a title like Battlefield 2042, Helldivers 2 is available for a very reasonable $40. With that squared away, maybe you’re wondering if Helldivers 2 is cross-platform.
