Dying Light 2 lockpicking guide: Lockpick crafting and upgrades

Finding that sweet spot.

Lockpicking is a fairly common mechanic in certain games, and you’ll do this often in Dying Light 2. Whether you’re just trying to loot chests, or you’re running past enemies to open a doorway, it’s imperative that you have the tools of the trade. More importantly, you need to do the process correctly. Otherwise, Aiden could waste those items or end up dead. Here’s our Dying Light 2 lockpicking guide to help you with lockpick crafting and upgrades.

Dying Light 2 lockpicking guide – How to craft and upgrade your lockpicks

You’ll learn the lockpick blueprint fairly early on in the campaign. You’re told how to do it by Hakon during a mission called Markers of Plague since you need to break into a hospital. For reference, 3x lockpicks require 5x scrap (which is a material that’s easy to find).

So, how exactly does lockpicking work in Dying Light 2? Well, if you’ve played Skyrim or Fallout 4, then you’re already familiar with this concept. If not, here’s the gist:

  • Chests and doorways have various lockpicking difficulty degrees.
  • Use your mouse to move the pick sideways.
  • Press and hold the “A” key to turn the lock. If it’s close or at the “sweet spot,” it’ll rotate as well. If not, then you’ll need to move the pick around until you get it right. It’s basically just trial and error.
  • If the pick is at the wrong spot, then it’ll eventually break.

Note: When it’s night or if you’re exploring interior zones, Aiden’s immunity will go down. This is active even while you’re in the middle of the lockpicking minigame.

Soon, once you have access to Craftmaster NPCs, you can check for lockpick upgrades in Dying Light 2. These would require different amounts of infected trophies (i.e., uncommon, rare, and unique). At lower levels, the upgrades will simply increase a lockpick’s durability.

However, at higher levels, you’ll be able to fully unlock a chest or a door by holding the “R” key. This is entirely dependent on the lock’s difficulty and the upgrade/tier that you’ve obtained so far. For example, once you can instantly open easy or medium locks, you could just make a mad dash when you’re in Metro Stations/fast travel areas. Avoid the enemies, reach the door to the power station, and hold the “R” key to open it.
