How to beat Magista, Tyrant of Slacktide in Another Crab’s Treasure

A sickly tyrant.

The second boss you encounter in Another Crab’s Treasure is an arduous fight that took me over a dozen attempts to succeed, so here’s how to beat Magista, Tyrant of Slacktide in Another Crab’s Treasure.

Another Crab’s Treasure: How to beat Magista, Tyrant of Slacktide

There are a lot of aspects about this fight that make it difficult to beat, and there are a lot of mistakes you can make that can ruin an attempt. Just like with Nephro, Captain of the Guard, you’ll have to die a few times to get the hang of the fight. You can beat Magista in Another Crab’s Treasure by using the Soda Can shell and staggering her.

How to learn Magista’s tactics

First off, there are some moves that you should memorize and learn. Magista can do a horizontal sweep with her chained ball weapon, as well as a vertical throw if you’re far away. Feel free to dodge side to side to avoid the horizontal sweep, as you have a few invincibility frames when dodging. Since she throws then pulls back the vertical throw, dodge left or right to avoid all damage from that move.

Magista will also use her pincers, which are difficult to time, but right after dodging them is a good time to lay in a hit or two. Whenever possible, get in a heavy attack by holding the attack button to deal more damage than usual.

You should also make sure to avoid Magista’s Aggro maneuver, denoted by the angry red symbol that appears. It’ll throw you into a cage and inflict a ton of damage, and dodging right will only trap you, so always dodge left to avoid it. Another annoying move is when she vomits up that poisonous goop, but all you can do is try your best to avoid stepping in it.

Finally, if you avoid the long-lasting spinning move that she does after a certain amount of time in a fight, you should be able to beat her (this is where I’d always start to mess up). Magista will start rapidly swinging in a circle toward your direction, and all you can do is sprint away or keep dodging out of the way. Try sprinting and blocking to roll away inside of your shell.

While there are plenty of shells you can bring to the fight from outside of the fort, the best one to use is the Soda Can that you can find lying around the room you fight Magista in. While I liked the Teacup that gave me an attack boost, the only way I would win the fight was with the Fizzle Shell Spell that comes with the Soda Can.

Fizzle says that it just releases pressurized air to push away enemies in a cone, but the bubbles you produce also inflict damage and increase stagger. Since it only costs one Unami Charge to cast it, this will quickly get her to stagger, allowing you to damage her as she’s vulnerable for a few seconds.

Best Stowaways to defeat Magista

If you’re trying to find the right Stowaways to use during the Magista fight, I’ve got you covered. Here are the two Stowaways I used when I won the fight:

  • Sea Star: +3 VIT
  • Anemone: +2 MSG

Since I knew Magista could deal significant damage to me if I made a mistake, I made sure to keep the Sea Star Stowaway equipped for extra HP. I would also recommend Anemone since it can increase damage dealt with your Shell Spells and you’re relying on Fizzle from your Soda Can shell to help you win the fight.

Hopefully, this guide to defeating Magista was helpful enough so you could finally beat her in your playthrough!
