Best way to defeat Thisobald Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3

There are two ways to defeat Thisobald Thorm in Baldur’s Gate 3. While the fight can be fun if you have a bunch of magic users in your party, the easiest and best way to defeat Thisobald Thorm is in conversation. Here’s how to beat Thisobald Thorm in both conversation and combat.

Beat Thisobald Thorm through conversation

There is a way to defeat Thisobald Thorm without going into combat. All the Thorm bosses can be defeated in non-combat, but it won’t be easy.

You can make a Saving Throw, with options given from your class, but know that the DC will likely be 14 or higher. If you clear that, you need to make a Performance check with a DC of 16, which is why doing this dialogue with your most charismatic party member is best. I used two Inspiration to reroll and I got lucky enough to pass it.

You’ll need to drink again and, again, make a successful Saving Throw, but this time the DC is 16. Then, another successful Performance check of 16 or higher. The story you choose to tell doesn’t matter. If you fail the check, you have one more chance with a Deception check, but the DC is 18.

If you pass all these checks, Thisobald Thorm will explode from drinking which saves you the trouble of beating him in combat, which is really difficult.

Thisobald Thorm is immune to all physical attacks (and Thunder), so use elemental attacks to defeat him. After hitting him with an element, he’ll absorb that element and hit you with it on his next attack.

To defeat Thisobald Thorm, you need to spread your characters out. He uses a big AoE attack which can heavily damage multiple characters. I recommend keeping your distance and using summons to distract Thisobald Thorm and take all the damage.

Note: Having multiple Moonlanterns will help in combat as your characters spread out.

Stay back and hit him with elemental spells. After around four turns, Thisobald Thorm will drink too much and get the Blacked Out condition. With this condition, Thisobald takes double Slashing, Bludgeoning, Piercing, Thunder, Radiant, and Force damage. My advice, hit him with everything you’ve got.

I took this opportunity to transform my Druid into an Owlbear and hit Thisobald Thorm twice for 45 damage each. Once it’s Thisobald Thorm’s turn again, he’ll start recovering and will lose all double damage and resistances, but you should still take this turn to dish out damage of any kind.

After dealing enough damage to Thisobald Thorm, you’ll defeat him. Clean up by defeating the minions too. Then, take the Worn Key and open the metal door in the back. Loot everything there and investigate his Research Journal to learn of a powerful concoction you can make.
