How to find and play Infected game mode in Modern Warfare 3 (MW3)

The return of a classic.

Infected is a fan-favorite mode in Call of Duty and a welcome palate cleanser from regular gameplay. This game type was added as part of the Season 1: Reloaded update, but it’s nowhere to be found on the main menu. Here’s how to find and play Infected game mode in Modern Warfare 3 (MW3).

Where is the Infected game mode in Modern Warfare 3 (MW3)?

You won’t find Infected anywhere on the main menu, and it isn’t featured as a “Hot” game type. At the time of writing, the only way to play Infected is through Quickplay. If you want to play Infected specifically, you must turn off every game mode in the Playlist besides Infected. You can do this by selecting Filter (Square on PlayStation) and unchecking each mode.

When you search for a quickplay match this way, you may have to wait a little longer to find a game, but it’ll always be Infected.

Infected is a unique game mode, as everyone starts on the same team. When the game begins, one person becomes “infected” and joins a team of their own. Whenever a player on the infected team scores a kill, their victim joins their team. The game ends when everyone is infected, or the timer expires.

The best thing about the Infected mode is the loadouts. Players start with a Lockwood 680 Shotgun and a Renetti. Infected players have a knife, a throwing knife, and a Tactical Insertion. These players can also access the Dead Silence Field Upgrade to stealthily approach their prey.

Infected is a fun game type as long as everyone plays along. Even though the mode is new, I already see players quitting when they get Infected. Stats aren’t tracked in this game mode, so you’ve got nothing to lose. You even get weapon XP as a bonus in Infected, so if you’ve not maxed out your Lockwood 680 and Renetti yet, it won’t take long to change that.

If you’re enjoying Season 1: Reloaded, don’t forget to try The Boys LTM. Check out our guide for all the challenges and rewards.
