How to get past Calip in Tears of the Kingdom (TotK)

A phenomenal performance.

In The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, there are very few obstacles the game won’t let you find a way around ahead of schedule. However, the man standing guard outside the ruins near Kakariko Village is an exception. This guide tells you how to get past Calip in The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom.

Tears of the Kingdom – how to get past Calip

You will likely visit Kakariko Village fairly early in your adventure. If you’re having trouble figuring out its location, check our guide on where to find Kakariko Village. When you explore the area, you’ll find some people standing near an exit that leads to a destination called the Ring Ruins.

A man named Calip keeps watch right near the canyon entrance. If you try to walk past him, he’ll let you know that entry has been prohibited by Princess Zelda. The same outcome occurs if you try to get tricky and approach by climbing walls or floating in by air. As soon as you get near, Calip chews you out for trying to explore that area. He definitely has gotten after me a few times. The only way to get past Calip is to progress the game to a certain point.

Specifically, you need to have cleared the Regional Phenomena main mission. This is the quest line that requires you to befriend four of the sages, and to clear the corresponding elemental temples. Then there is some additional activity at Hyrule Castle (for more information, see our guide on how to unlock Memory 11).

Once you have progressed the Crisis at Hyrule Castle main mission to the appropriate point, you unlock a new main mission called Find the Fifth Sage. Though it is perhaps not obvious, this is your cue that you can finally get past Calip and enter the Ring Ruins.

Return to Kakariko Village and find Paya and Tauro standing near the entrance to the Ring Ruins. Talk to them to fill them in on the details. This unlocks the Secret of the Ring Ruins main mission. Now you can explore the area without issue.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom is available on the Nintendo Switch.
