How to summon a Golem in Diablo 4

It shouldn't be this complicated...

If your dream playstyle in Diablo 4 is to be surrounded by an army of minions, you can’t go wrong with the Necromancer. Sure, the Druid has a couple of wolf companions and can become a beast themselves, but for the quintessential ‘pet’ build, undead is the way to go. If you’re after a Golem, you’ll realize that summoning one isn’t exactly intuitive. A few things in Diablo 4 aren’t as straightforward as they should be, and Golems are one of those. With this in mind, let me show you how to summon a Golem in Diablo 4.

Just so we’re all on the same page, only the Necromancer can summon Golems. The Necromancer unlocks the Book of the Dead as a class-specific enhancement at level 5, allowing you to summon minions. At level 25, you can accept a quest called ‘Necromancer: Call of the Underworld.’ After completing that quest, the Golem is yours. Make sure you select them in the Book of the Dead to enable them.

Here’s the confusing part. You need to put the Golem on your skill bar to use it, but there’s no clear explanation in the game on how to do that.

If you play on a PC, press S on the keyboard to bring up the ‘Skill Assignment Flyout.’ The icon highlighted in the image above is the Golem. Drag that onto your Skill Bar, and you can now use Golems whenever you wish.

If you play on a controller, bring up your Skill Tree in your inventory and press the left stick in. Doing this opens the Skill Assignment menu, and you can assign the Golem to your Skill Bar from there. Ensure you aren’t on the Paragon page, as pressing the left stick will open your Glyph menu instead.

Does this mean I lose a skill slot if I want to summon a Golem?

In Diablo 4, the Skill Bar is limited, and unfortunately, the Golem takes one of those valuable slots. This limitation is likely why you don’t see many Necromancers surrounded by minions on the world map. If you summon a Golem and then replace the Skill, the Golem immediately despawns, so there’s no way to cheat the system.

If the Skill slot is too valuable, you can sacrifice the Golem in the Book of the Dead for 30% increased Critical Strike damage. It’s not as cool as a hulking beast that follows you around, but that’s a lot of damage!
