What are dimensions in The Thaumaturge?

You won’t be traveling to the Twilight Zone or Lorule — dimensions refer to areas you can upgrade your skills.

There are four dimensions you can spend your Thaumaturgy points — which are experience points — and they act as skill trees. However, they do not have branching paths, so, they are more like…skill lines. Anyway, these are the following:

  • Dimension Force Heart
  • Dimension Force Mind
  • Dimension Force Deed
  • Dimension Force Word

If you spend your Thaumaturge point in a specific dimension, you will get specific upgrades that you can equip your skills with. These skills are your combat moves, which are divided into five different types:

  • Quick Attacks: physical attacks that are not very strong, but will take the least amount of time to perform (same-turn move).
  • Planned Attacks: stronger physical attacks, but will take at least one turn to perform.
  • Damage Over Time: thaumaturgy-based attacks that will cause damage at the end of a specific number of turns.
  • Influences: thaumaturgy-based attacks that will not deal damage but will reduce Focus.
  • Strong Attack: a almost-deadly physical attack combination that is only available once the enemy has lost all Focus.

Each upgrade will grant a bonus to the aforementioned skills, giving them effects that can potentially turn the tide of a battle. These include effects such as healing, damage output bonuses, double turns, armor bonuses, etc.

Which dimension should you upgrade first in The Thaumaturge?

In any other game, you would probably approach each skill line with caution and with a build in mind, making you prioritize a specific dimension or other in-game mechanic. However, this approach is wrong. Other than combat, these upgrades do not have any in-game effect that would make them stand out from each other. They all work pretty much the same. You see, each of them will open up dialogue options and unlock certain objects you can inspect and analyze with your thaumaturgy to draw conclusions, making them equally important.

If you fail to invest points in one of the dimensions, you will see dialogue options completely greyed out and objects will be locked, preventing you from interacting with them. This happened to me once during a quest, blocking me from interacting with one object because I lacked the specific Word requirement. I ended up backtracking later after I upgraded my Word dimension. So, as a rule of thumb, invest your Thaumaturgy points equally across all four dimensions so that you don’t miss out on any in-game content and dialogue.

How to get Salutors and Flaws in The Thaumaturge

One of the very first things you are going to notice when you invest your Thaumaturgy points is that you will get to certain roadblocks where there are some greyed-out figures. These are missing Salutors which, once caught, will unlock further skill upgrades. How can you get these Salutors?

Just play the game! Roll credits. No, all you have to do is complete mostly the main quests in The Thaumaturge and you will naturally encounter several Salutors which you can control. After you visit Rasputin and reconnect yourself with the thaumaturgy dimension said Salutor belongs to, you will then unlock more Salutors.

Unlocking Flaws will also happen naturally while completing main quests, although I’ve found some of them mainly by completing side quests. These Flaws will boost your dimension levels and even act as skill upgrades, so make sure to complete these side quests before powering through the main quests – some side quests are locked to a specific Act.

How to level up fast in The Thaumaturge

The Thaumaturge Detective Clues

Just like any other RPG or even game of every genre, completing main and side quests will boost your experience income quite substantially, netting you a lot of Thaumaturgy points to invest in your dimensions. However, one way to level up even further and faster is to interact with every little object and person possible. Yes, I know that interacting with a random letter in the ground will not boost your XP in the grand scheme of things, but these things add up as an increasingly bigger snowball.

Be sure to continue upgrading your dimensions equally throughout the game. I would also recommend keeping some Thaumaturgy points in the bag in case you encounter an item that needs a specific dimension level upgrade in The Thaumaturge. That way, you won’t have to backtrack and just upgrade said dimension immediately.
