No matter which gift you choose for Aerith, the outcome will be the same. After selecting a gift, the merchant states, “Oh, I meant everything except that one!” He then hands you a pendant of Aerith’s favorite flower, a yellow Lily.
So while you don’t give Aerith the gift of your choosing, it works in your favor as you receive a gift for her of something she loves most. It’s a symbolic moment in the game that represents your relationship with her since Aerith showed Cloud a yellow Lily when they first met.

After giving Aerith the yellow Lily pendant, you guys will continue with your date and make your way to the candy merchant. She will ask you to select one candy, which you must then decide on.
