Uh oh, it’s a Dota 2 story and professional dotes man Tim McDonald should be in bed; this looks like a job for me, the stand-in Dota 2 news man. Valve has announced that the Dota 2 Workshop Tools are now out in Alpha form. Hurrah. Probably.
Thanks to the helpful announcement post, I can convey that these tools are intended for creating and sharing custom maps, modded game modes and the like. The Alpha is being dubbed a “developer focused release” and has fairly demanding system requirements. For a start, forget about using it unless you have a 64-bit version of Windows and a DirectX 11 compatible graphics card. Okay, I guess that’s not terribly demanding in gaming terms, but I’d imagine the base Dota 2 game can run on a whole lot less.
Valve plans to expand the range of PCs the tools will run on in future releases. More details about the Dota 2 Workshop stuff and a link to a developer wiki can be found over here on this dedicated Steam discussion thread.
Specifically, this guide to actually installing the Workshop Tools will probably be handy. You need to be in the Steam client beta and so on, so best have a read of those.
Here’s what you can expect from the tool suite at present:
- Steam Workshop Submissions – This early version includes the ability to upload and distribute custom game modes through the Workshop. This new automated process allows players to subscribe to an author’s custom game mode to automatically keep current as updates are released by the author.
- Testing Custom Game Modes – This alpha release is focused on getting the tools to developers first. Currently playing custom games requires a 64-bit version of Windows and a Direct3D 11 compatible GPU. In upcoming future releases we will extend support to more systems (including 32-bit and Direct3D 9) and make it easier for players to download, find matches for, and play user created game modes.
In other dotes news (can I call it dotes, is that a thing?) those elusive Techies will be on their way before the end of August. Apparently, “The Dota 2 Team is working on the Compendium Stretch Goals and putting the final touches on the explosive gang.” They were absent from the last update, but should be on the way in the coming weeks. This is Valve we’re talking about here, so probably around 31 August.
