One of the few good things about The Phantom Menace was the introduction of the badass Sith lord Darth Maul. With his red tattooed face and double ended lightsaber, Maul allowed us to forget, at least for a few minutes, about the awful film we’d been watching.
Well it seems we nearly got to play as Maul himself when work started on a new Star Wars game centered around that hot headed redhead. The existence of the game was first revealed by Game Informer with some help from Polygon. Shortly afterwards some actual gameplay footage appeared on Youtube which shows us that not only did it look great but it also seemed fairly close to completion.
The game first went into development back in late 2010 and was being created by Texas indie developer Red-Fly Studio who also worked on the Wii port of The Force Unleashed 2. The game was originally intended to be a Nintendo exclusive bur was later moved to PC, Xbox 360 and PS3.
It seems the development process was pretty difficult since Red-Fly were kept in the dark about a lot of issues regarding Maul and weren’t even told he was going to in the CClone Wars TV show. Eventually the project clashed with George Lucas’ plans who stepped in and asked the developers to make it a game about Darth Maul and extended universe character Darth Talon.
Later Lucas Arts cut off communication with Red-Fly and binned the project entirely. The Nerf herders.
