Thanks to a bug in the in-game gem store, players can pick up Episode 1 of Guild Wars 2’s The Icebrood Saga for free. Instead of trying to cover it up and warn players not to “abuse” the bug, the official Guild Wars 2 Twitter account has said that the bug will be patched today, but until then you are welcome to take advantage of it and grab a free copy of Whisper in the Dark.

If you own Guild Wars 2’s second expansion, Path of Fire, then all you need to do to unlock the first episode of The Icebrood Saga for free is log in to the game.
The Guild Wars 2 Living World
The Icebrood Saga is the latest story arc in the continuously evolving Guild Wars 2 Living World. The Living World is ArenaNet’s way of progressing the story in bite-size content updates without releasing an entirely new expansion. When a new episode comes out, it is free for a limited time and players need to log in to acquire it. If you miss the window, you need to purchase the episode through the gem store.
Episode 2 of the Icebrood Saga, Shadow in the Ice, was released at the end of January. So, this bug that lets you get the first episode for free is very conveniently timed. Some would say too conveniently timed. But we don’t deal in conspiracy theories here (not today anyway).
If you missed Whisper in the Dark the first time around, here’s the trailer that begins the journey into the Far Shiverpeaks. In this Living World episode, players can explore a new map, unlock two new masteries, discover upgradeable Ancient Boreal weapons, and take on new weekly rotating strike missions. That’s a lot of content you can get for free.
Guild Wars 2 is available for download for PC via the game’s official site. If you purchase the latest expansion, Path of Fire, you will get the previous one, Heart of Thorns, for free. With the expansion, you will also have access to the Living World, which means you can grab Guild Wars 2 The Ice Brood Saga Episode 1 for free for one day thanks to the gem store bug.
