Streets of Rage 4 video takes a closer look at its unique art style

These streets look great.

Earlier this week, we conducted a Streets of Rage 4 interview that took a closer look at the series’s return to prominence. To go along with that, Dotemu has released a new video that provides a behind-the-scenes look at its unique visuals.

The team talks about the newly revamped art style in its latest blog post to coincide with the video. It breaks down how Lizardcube art and creative director Ben Fiquet and lead background artist Julian Nguyen You became inspired. A lot of the Streets of Rage classic cast is here, along with its latest newcomer, Cherry.

According to the team, the visual style “incorporates fresh additions and a distinctive feel while upholding the series’s signature neon-soaked urban aesthetic.” On top of that, though, it also “adds in elements once planned for the original Streets of Rage 2.” This includes a car that can drive out of nowhere and run over players, if they’re not careful.

These Streets are alive with beauty

The Streets of Rage 4 featurette runs about six minutes long and really goes in depth in terms of the beautiful rendering that Lizardcube has in mind. There’s also an early look at how the first concept drawings came together and how they eventually became the final characters we see in the game now.

There’s also comparison to the older games in some places, so you can see how far the game has progressed. It shows just how inspired the work is, as well as what touch-ups the team applied to the new game.

Streets of Rage 4 doesn’t currently have a release date, but we do know it’s coming out in the first half of 2020. Those interested in the upcoming game can wishlist it on Steam. It’s definitely worth it, especially if you’re in an “old-school brawl” frame of mind.
