Next Mass Effect game will use the Frostbite 2 engine

BioWare’s Yanick Roy has confirmed that the next Mass Effect title (whatever it turns out to be) will make use of DICE’s Frostbite 2 engine, marking a move away from Epic’s Unreal platform that was used for Mass Effect 3. It was already announced that Dragon Age 3(also from BioWare) would be using Frostbite 2, so this news isn’t a huge surprise.

Roy mentioned the engine change in a blog post on BioWare’s official site, stating “[the next Mass Effect game] will be built with the amazing technology of Frostbite as its foundation, enhanced by many of the systems that the Dragon Age III team has already spent a lot of time building.”

He admits that he’s unable to say much more about the game right now, but insists that it will “be very respectful of the heritage built over the course of the first three game” and adds “You can still expect the pillars the franchise is known for to be fully intact though, including diverse alien races, a huge galaxy to explore, and of course rich, cinematic storytelling.”

The next Mass Effect title will be created by a team at BioWare Montreal.
