Bioshock Film Gets New Director

Universal Pictures has replaced Bioshock director Gore Verbinski with Juan Carlos Fresnadillo.According to Variety, Verbinski – of Pirates of the Caribbean fame – dropped out of the directing role due to the decision to shoot the film outside of America. The decision was apparently forced by the film’s spiralling budget and the producers decided to look elsewhere to take advantage of tax breaks and a more favourable exchange rate. Although Verbinski will no longer direct the film, he is still listed as a producer.Fresnadillo directed the Spanish thriller Intacto and made his Hollywood debut directing the sequel to Danny Boyle’s gruesome zombie romp 28 Days Later. We suspect the story’s unique setting may be the cause of the rising budget – it can’t be easy to create a convincing underwater city and we hope Fresnadillo gets the visual style and atmosphere right.
