Best Destiny 2 Whisper of the Worm build: Best perks, class, and more

A great gun if you can hit your shots

The Whisper of the Worm is a shiny new Exotic Sniper Rifle tied to the Whisper quest. If you’ve got your hands on this deadly heavy weapon, let me show you the best Destiny 2 Whisper of the Worm build: Best perks, class, and more.

How to get the Whisper of the Worm in Destiny 2

Before we dive into the build, let me explain how to get the Whisper of the Worm if you have yet to acquire it. You can earn the Whisper of the Worm by completing The Whisper Exotic quest. This mission is tricky, as there are several brutal jump puzzles, but it’s worth the effort.

Once you’ve got the weapon, you can acquire its craftable perks by finding Oracles in the Whisper quest. At the time of writing, there are only two Oracles up for grabs, but they unlock arguably the best craftable perk for the weapon.

You must head to the Enclave in Savathun’s Throne World to craft weapons or alter ones you’ve already made.

Best perks for the Whisper of the Worm in Destiny 2

The Whisper of the Worm’s Exotic perk refills the magazine if you quickly land three precision hits. As the weapon only has a three-round magazine, you essentially get the magazine refunded if you land your hits. Precision hits are tough to land at speed, so this Sniper Rifle rewards a steady hand.

You’ll earn the Field Prep perk once you find the first two Oracles in The Whisper Exotic Quest. Field Prep is “best in slot” as it gives us extra ammo reserves and a faster reload speed.

The best perk selection from left to right is as follows:

  • Smallbore Barrel
  • Flared Magwell
  • Field Prep
  • Whispered Breathing
  • Fitted Stock

If your Intrinsic perks are locked, ensure you’ve picked the White Nail III Intrinsic, as I have in the picture above.

These perks are excellent as they synergize so well with the rifle’s strengths. Smallbore Barrel increases range and stability with zero downsides. Flared Magwell increases our reload speed, which improves our damage output if we can land those critical hits. Field Prep is superb, improving our reload speed even further, and Whispered Breathing is the only available perk for its slot. Finally, the Fitted Stock reduces recoil, which is a nice “quality of life” buff for Sniper Rifles.

Best class for the Whisper of the Worm in Destiny 2

The Whisper of the Worm is a unique Sniper Rifle as it occupies your Heavy Weapon slot. This puts us in a predicament as the Whisper of the Worm can deal tremendous damage but requires skill. On the other hand, you could simply fire a rocket with the Dragon’s Breath or Gjallarhorn, which even rewards glancing blows.

It’s a hard sell, but with a steady hand, the Whisper of the Worm can wreck champions and bosses. I’ve had some success in the Nightfall although I prefer Rocket Launchers for their guaranteed damage.

You can use the Whisper of the Worm with just about any class in the game, but I recommend the Solar Subclass. Solar weapons are great in the Season of the Wish and Into the Light, thanks to powerful Artifact Perks like Flint Striker

The Whisper quest is well worth completing to earn the Whisper of the Worm and is relatively straightforward after a few attempts. If you’re up for a challenge, you can tackle the quest solo if you want a shot at some rare Triumphs.
