S-Tier skills

  • Melee Mastery
  • Shooting Mastery
  • Deadeye
  • Biology
  • Leadership

Melee and Shooting Mastery are two very important skills you should focus on in Broken Roads if you want to dominate combat scenarios. While Melee Mastery grants you bonus damage, accuracy, critical hit chance, and initiative when wielding a melee weapon, Shooting Mastery does the same thing but when you’re wielding a ranged weapon. As you level these up you’ll get even more bonuses too.

Deadeye is another great skill to upgrade since it improves your accuracy when shooting targets. Each point in Deadeye will increase your accuracy by +0.5%. Then there’s Biology which can improve the effectiveness of healing items by +1% per Biology point. You’ll be doing plenty of healing in and out of combat.

Finally, Leadership is the last S-Tier skill that you should focus on. Each point in Leadership will add a 1% chance that all companions gain +1 initiative at the beginning of combat. You always want to hit first before the enemy.

A-Tier skills

  • Throwing
  • Drunken Master
  • Punt
  • Tinker

Although these skills are still good to improve, they’re not as vital as the S-Tier skills. Throwing will allow you to throw items further, increasing the distance by +0.2% per point. This is useful for when you want to throw grenades at enemies but you don’t want to get too close to them.

Drunken Master is more useful than you may realize. When Tipsy, Drunk, or Shitfaced, your damage increases by +0.2% per point. You’ll gain even more bonuses when you’ve consumed alcohol by upgrading this skill. Punt is another interesting skill that has a few uses. In combat, you can spend a Punt Point to increase your attack accuracy. But out of combat, you can spend a Punt Point to improve your chances of passing a skill check.

There’s also Tinker which can grant you additional utility slots for healing items and the like. At the start of Broken Roads, you only have two slots, so you can’t carry much, making Tinker a useful skill to increase.

B-Tier skills

  • Barbican
  • Opportunist
  • Vigilance

These B-Tier skills aren’t terrible, but they’re not the skills I would focus on first. Barbican allows you to take a defensive stance for benefits like being immune to getting Flanked or reducing incoming damage. This can come in handy in certain situations but it’s not a preferred skill.

Then there’s Opportunist which grants you the chance to attack enemies who move out of your melee range. I don’t often see enemies moving from their spot while in combat so I didn’t find Opportunist useful.

Finally, Vigilance allows you to prepare an attack and fire on the first enemy who moves within your range. I’d rather just attack an enemy instead of prepare one, so this skill isn’t worth it.

Hopefully, this ranked tier list of the best skills in Broken Roads was helpful for your playthrough. If you’re just starting a new run you may also run into Ian Mason who you can either pay off or attack, which is a tough decision to make.
