Bohemia Interactive renames Arma 3 isle, following detention of employees

Developers Bohemia Interactive have announced that the fictional island in Arma 3 will no longer be named ‘Limnos,’ but will instead be called ‘Altis.’ This decision is a response to the recent detention of two Bohemia Interactive employees (Ivan Buchta and Martin Pezlar) on the Greek island of Lemnos.

Both employees have since been released (after being held for 129 on suspicion of espionage) and returned home to the Czech Republic, where they are preparing for a possible appeal.

Bohemia says the team “no longer feels passionate about using the previous name, ‘Limnos’, and hopes that the new identity, ‘Altis’, will help emphasize the fictional nature of the game.” The game’s main island takes inspiration from the real life Lemnos, but, as the developer is now very keen to stress, that inspiration is based on “commercially and publicly available data.” And not, for example, spying.

A second, smaller, island to be featured in the game (‘Stratis’) will keep its name.

Arma 3 is due later this year.
