Elden Ring: How to reach Mohgwyn Palace (secret area)

I hope you're prepared...

Mohgwyn Palace used to be a secret area that didn’t have a lot of attractions. Now, however, it hosts the doorway to the Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

Elden Ring guide – How to reach the Mohgwyn Palace secret area

There are two ways to reach Mohgwyn Palace in Elden Ring, with one method being objectively much easier than the other.

Have a look at both methods, and then choose which one you’d rather pull off. No matter which method you perform, you’ll end up at the same place.

Using the Pureblood Knight’s Medal given by Varré

Objectively the easiest way to get to Mohgwyn Palace (depending on how far into the game you are, naturally) is by completing White Mask Varré’s quest line.

Don’t worry if you’ve talked to Varré extensively or minimally, as the stages for his quest line will only really begin once you’ve beaten Godrick the Grafted at Stormveil Castle.

Follow these steps in order:

  • After beating Godrick the Grafted, speak to Varré at the First Step site of grace. He will congratulate you and suggest an audience with Two Fingers at the Roundtable Hold.
  • Head to Roundtable Hold and open through the newly-opened door in the main room to behold Two Fingers. Talk to the Finger Reader and exhaust her dialogue.
  • Head back to Varré, who is now at the Rose Church in Linurnia, shown below. If you’re struggling to find this point of grace, make sure to explore all of Linurnia for all the three map fragments. You may be in the wrong section.

  • At the Rose Church, speak to Varré who will be standing in front of it. When asked, tell him that Two Fingers “didn’t seem right.” Don’t worry if you said that you through it looked fine, as he’ll only dismiss you and you can talk to him to get asked again.
  • Varré will express his joy at your agreement, and will issue you five Festering Bloody Fingers. You must invade three other players with these items. It doesn’t matter if you win or lose, so if you’re in a hurry, you could execute yourself immediately upon entering another world.
  • Alternatively to invading three other players, you could defeat the NPC Magnus the Beast Claw by invading his world Writheblood Ruins, pictured below.

  • Upon invading three other players or defeating Magnus the Beast Claw, return to Varré. He will appoint you as a Knight of Mohg should you let him, and will give you the Lord of Blood’s Favor.
  • You now must wash the cloth in a maiden’s blood. As you’re maidenless, you must instead travel to Church of Inhibition, pictured below. There you’ll find a statue that you can interact with to soak the Lord of Blood’s Favor into maiden blood. Just ignore the invader that will be after you. Please note that the Church of Inhibition can only be traveled to from the north and not the south. Go to the Grand Lift of Dectus site of grace and head south and around to get there.

  • Return to Varré and talk to him. You’ll need to offer your finger. Keep talking to him until you receive both the Bloody Finger (a reusable Festering Bloody Finger) and the Pureblood Knight’s Medal.

With the Pureblood Knight’s Medal, you can teleport to Moghwyn Palace and activate the site of grace.

Using the teleporter in the Consecrated Snowfields

To get to the Mohgwyn Palace secret area in Elden Ring, you could also use the teleporter in the Consecrated Snowfield. This is done by obtaining both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion. This is a late game area, so if there’s anything you don’t understand how to get to, then simply do Varré’s questline.

With both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion, you’ll be able to use a second command when operating the Grand Lift of Rold, taking you to the Consecrated Snowfield instead of the Mountaintops of the Giants.

Now in the Consecrated Snowfields, we can find that teleporter. If Ordina Liturgical Town is all the way north, then this one is tucked away just northwest of the Yelough Anix Tunnel (it’s the closest bonfire). What you’re looking for is a large tree on the horizon, and you’ll know you’re near your quarry because a Sanguine Noble NPC will attack you.

After eliminating it, look below the cliffs to find the teleporter. Activate it to find yourself in a new location.

With that teleporter activated, you’ll be sent straight to Mohgwyn Palace. This is a much simpler route, but only if you’ve made it this far into the game.

Now that you know both routes of getting to Mohgwyn Palace, all you need to do now is ascend those steps and beat Mohg, Lord of Blood.
