The final and most persistent boss of Dark Souls on PC was one players had no chance of defeating. Games for Windows Live plagued and defeated a number of players ever since the hardcore, action-RPG was ported to PC.
A new update for Dark Souls: Prepare To Die Edition allows player to optionally remove GfWL and play the game directly through Steam. The update will also come with full Steamworks functionality which means loads of mods and other fan made content to come.

The update is available today, December 15th, 2014 and the saved data transfer service will be provided from December 15th, 2014 to February 16th, 2015. The official page also notes that saved data transfers cannot be guaranteed after February 16th.
