How to fix the Grunt Work quest bug in Starfield

The only good bug is a dead bug!

Unfortunately, there are two bugs plaguing players during the Grunt Work quest in Starfield. Both bugs can cause game-breaking issues where you cannot progress with the quest as intended, essentially locking your game. The first bug happens before you must kill the Terrormorph, while the second one happens when you report back to Hadrian after killing the Terrormorph. Luckily, there are “fixes” you can perform that will help you continue with the quest as intended. Here’s how to fix the Grunt Work quest bug in Starfield.

Wait For The System To Reengage Starfield

Image: PC Invasion

If your game is stuck waiting for the “wait for the system to reengage” step to complete, then you need to restart the mission again. When this happens, you won’t be able to use the turrets to take down the Terrormorph. However, you can still beat the monster and progress the quest as usual, but it is very annoying to do so. To fix this bug, restart the mission and avoid activating one of the power generators while the quest prompt says to “wait for the system to reengage” (doing so will cause the bug). Then, you will be able to progress the quest normally. However, there is one more bug you could run into after killing the Terrormorph.

Follow Hadrian Starfield

Image: PC Invasion

After you kill the Terrormorph on Tau Ceti II during the Grunt Work quest, you are told to hand the Terrormorph tissue sample to Hadrian to look at it under a microscope and follow her downstairs. However, she doesn’t path to the research station as she should. Instead, she goes into an idle animation, looking at random stuff in her hand, and occasionally walks onto the balcony. Unfortunately, the only way to fix this Grunt Work quest bug in Starfield is by restarting your game client and then reloading a save from right before you kill the Terrormorph. By doing so, Hadrian will now walk where she is supposed to, and you can continue with the Grunt Work quest as intended.
