How to play Smash the Star in Foamstars

Every round of Foamstar’s Smash the Star mode has two unique goals. The first is a race to score seven Chills against the enemy team. The second is a furious scramble to defeat the enemy team’s Star Player while protecting your own.

When you score seven Chills, the best player on the enemy team will become their Star Player. This Star Player has more health than usual and is highlighted with a Star icon. You win the game when you beat this player; just make sure to protect your Star Player from harm.

You’ll get the basics down after a few matches, but there are a few things you can do to tip the scales in your favor.

Stick with your team

It takes a while to defeat opponents in Foamstars, so I recommend sticking with your team and fighting with a numbers advantage. You can’t dictate how your squad mates will play, but if you stay with at least one of them, you can easily take out solo players.

I see a ton of players who like to run off and do their own thing, but it rarely works out. Play smart and you’ll quickly score some wins.

Shoot the ground

You can quickly slide across your team’s foam, but you’ll grind to a halt on your opponents. Covering the ground is a little boring but is essential for map control. Even if you aren’t scoring Chills, you can assist your team by keeping a steady stream of foam on the floor.

If you control the map, your team can quickly advance while your opponents can hardly move. If you take anything from this guide, prioritize map control to overwhelm the enemy team when you’re not in combat.

Protect your Star Player

Your Star Player has extra health, but they aren’t invincible. It’s the team’s responsibility to keep the Star Player safe. If they get Chilled, you lose the game. I’ve played with aggressive Star Players and also met plenty who prefer to stay back. Both strategies have pros and cons, but you’ll have a much better time if you stick together.

If I’m the Star Player and my team has good control of the map, I like to stay mobile and speed around on my board. You won’t always have the opportunity to play like this, but you can make it very hard for your opponents to trap you.

Don’t forget to Slide

We’ve covered the importance of map control, but don’t forget to use it. You can quickly slide across your team’s foam and are hard to hit at full speed. Remember, you can beat foamed enemies by sliding into them and rescue teammates with the same maneuver.

If you’re a Splatoon player, just remember that sliding doesn’t refill your weapon, although you can reload while on your board.

Smash the Star is a fun mode, and it’s so much better when each team works together. If you’re interested in Bubble Gems, check out our guide, as there’s more to them than you may think.
