Super Mario Bros Wonder trailer showcases side-scrolling 2D platforming

Unlike the Nintendo Switch’s mainline Mario title Super Mario Odyssey, this game looks akin to the style of New Super Mario Bros U. In a short trailer, Nintendo reveals their new 2D side-scrolling platformer game Super Mario Bros Wonder. Each new Mario game usually has a new mechanic or gimmick, this one being a Wonder Flower that transforms the levels. There was a lot to take in during those two to three minutes of gameplay.

In the description for the trailer that just released, Nintendo had this to say, “Surprise and wonder await at every corner in the next evolution of 2D side-scrolling Mario fun!” We don’t know much more than what the trailer provides, but there are plenty new items and mechanics to discover in the video. Throughout the different stages shown off, there seems to be a range of new activities, creatures, and abilities.

Like most Mario games, Super Mario Bros Wonder includes multiplayer gameplay. This time though, Daisy has joined the party. Usually, it’s just Mario, Luigi, some Toads, and sometimes Princess Peach. Now, the trailer confirmed that you can play as Mario, Peach, Luigi, Daisy, or Toad.

After the trailer, they explained that when you touch this Wonder Flower, unexpected things will happen. At one point, Mario can even become an elephant. We won’t know the full extent of the mechanics until the near future. Super Mario Bros Wonder releases on the Nintendo Switch on October 20.
