thatgamecompany have now finished their three-game contract with Sony Computer Entertainment America, the developers who brought us Flow, Flower and Journey have decided to go fully independent with a healthy $5.5 million from Benchmark Capital’s Mitch Lasky. The company co-founder Jenova Chen wrote on the TGC blog:

“Today I am please to announce thatgamecompany has raised funding to develop and release our games independently,”

“This enables us to bring our games to more platforms and provide our players the highest quality experience at every point of contact,” Chen continued. He decided not to reveal what TGC’s next big project is, but did say that the team is “very excited about our new adventure” and that they plan to offer more news about that next project “soon.

However TGC’s first three games are still owned by Sony, so they won’t be going multiplatform for the foreseeable future.

thatgamecompany celebrated its sixth year in operation in May. Chen said in May that TGC is currently courting publishers for its next game, and that we will hopefully hear about it at some point during 2012.
