The Last of Us ripoff taken down from Nintendo eShop

No more hope for The Last Hope.

First reported by Eurogamer, an infamous ripoff of Sony’s hit game The Last of Us, dubbed The Last Hope: Dead Zone Survival, is no longer on the Nintendo eShop. Sony has also fully cracked down on trailers for the game, taking them off of YouTube through copyright claims. Additionally, Eurogamer noted that attempting to access the official eShop page for The Last Hope on Nintendo’s UK website will now bring you to a 404 image featuring Peppy Hare, specifically artwork of his appearance in Star Fox Zero.

Of course, plenty of blatant knockoffs of popular media have surfaced throughout the years, and the attention these have received has varied wildly. But The Last Hope, which snuck its way into the Nintendo eShop on June 30, became particularly infamous undoubtedly due to the sheer pedigree of the material it’s copying from as well as its appearance on a major digital storefront, from one of Sony’s competitors no less.

A game begging to be mocked

One of the most widely viewed videos on The Last Hope came from Digital Foundry, which donned the appropriate title “The Last Hope on Nintendo Switch – The Worst Game We’ve Ever Reviewed.” The description for the video says that the game features “no redeeming features whatsoever – not even at its $0.99 sale price.” Not only that, it notes that the footage shown in the trailers did not even appear in the final product.

There exists plenty of other videos and pieces of content on The Last Hope where that came from, including a few speedruns of the game, believe it or not. Now that this much-ridiculed Last of Us ripoff is no longer on sale, those speedrunners are likely some of the few individuals on the planet who still own the game in any capacity. As important as game preservation may be, players likely won’t miss The Last Hope too much with it now gone.
