V Rising: How to unlock technology recipes with paper and tomes

A little bit of research.

Crafting is primary means of increasing your gear score in V Rising. However, there will come a time when you’d reach a hump. Enemies tend to be tougher, but you can’t seem to find anything that can boost you further. That’s where the game’s technology mechanic comes in. Here’s our V Rising Research Desk technology guide to help you with the recipes that you can unlock using paper and tomes.

V Rising guide: Research Desk technology recipes guide

By following the early-game tasks in V Rising, you’ll be able to obtain the blueprint for the Research Desk. You’ll find it in the build menu’s Research tab, and it requires 8x Plank, 120x Animal Hide, and 80x Stone.

This is when you’ll want to amass paper and various tomes. Paper in V Rising can be found in a few locations (just mouse over the yellow areas of the map to see the types of loot therein). Both paper and certain tomes can also drop from enemies, and the tomes themselves denote a particular recipe.

In any case, interact with the Research Desk in V Rising to unlock technology recipes. There are two ways to do this:

  • Discover a random technology by spending 50x paper. A random item that you can craft will then get unlocked.
  • If you have a tome in your inventory, that blueprint will also become available. Click on it to fully unlock the recipe, which will also automatically consume the tome.

Depending on what you’ve unlocked, check the workbenches for new items that you can make. There’s a good chance that you’ll find the Merciless variants of items:

  • Merciless Copper Sword (12 gear score) – 1x Copper Sword, 2x Crude Sapphire, 8x Whetstone, and 4x Leather.
  • Merciless Nightstalker Gloves or Boots – 1x Nightstalker Gloves/Boots, 4x Leather, 4x Coarse Thread, and 8x Copper Ingot.

With a couple of pieces of brand new gear, your character’s gear score will slightly increase. New Blood Altar targets may show up, and some tougher enemies will be easier to eliminate.

Early in the campaign, these equipped items ought to be enough to bridge the gap between your old set and those from Quincey the Bandit King (i.e., Iron Weapons and Hallowfang Battlegear). But, do keep in mind that you still need to make explosives to destroy the gates to the Stronghold.

Last but not least, duplicate tomes need not go to waste. They still have a purpose, as they’ll let you get additional papers for technology recipes in V Rising. If you’ve already built The Devourer (i.e., 12x Plank and 6x Copper Ingot), you can throw in any duplicate tomes you have to obtain 10x Paper.
