Wasteland 3: Aspen, Little Hell, and Victory Buchanan

After eliminating Valor Buchanan in Denver, the resort town of Aspen is your next destination as part of Wasteland 3's main questline. Here, you'll find Victory Buchanan holed up in Little Hell Resort. Note: For more locations or quests, you can head back to our walkthrough's main page. Alternatively, you can check our Wasteland 3 guides and features hub. Wasteland 3: Aspen and Little Hell Aspen is all the way to the north of the world map. You're fine as long as you have the Deliverer Chassis for your Kodiak as it protects the squad from radiation level 2. In any case, once you've arrived in the location, Riley Woodson (the younger brother of the Desert Rangers' general) will ask for your aid. The enemies you'll fight in Aspen and Little Hell are Victory Buchanan's personal army, the Breathers. These psychos are induced with drugs and hallucinogens to make them attack enemies on sight. They're also highly resistant to poison and other status effects. Click on each page below for the particular area or section that you need help with: Aspen - Victory's playground Little Hell - The hostages Conclusion: What to do with Victory Buchanan Aspen Eliminate the first group of Breathers in the open area. One of the Breathers has the Welcome Lodge Key. Rather than using that key to open the lodge's main entrance, check out one of the trucks (Lockpicking 7) to find the Employee Lounge Key. This will open the side of the building. Pick up the loot and open the room (Lockpicking 7) to meet Opie. He sells a lot of stuff including the Pup Scout Camping Guide (Survival +1) and the Bear Suit (outfit). If you open the small room, you'll find a terminal (Nerd Stuff 6) that lets you reprogram the turrets to attack the Breathers instead. The bar has a corpse with the Veteran Ranger's Star accessory (Hard Ass +1). Anyway, with the help of the turrets, go take out the Breathers in the lodge's main area. You can find the M1989A1 assault rifle and the Gift Shop Key. The key opens the small room which has a toaster (Toaster Repair 7). Meanwhile, the terminal in the gift shop also lets you lower the drawbridge to reach the next area. Cross the drawbridge and you'll receive a message from Riley. Continue onwards to spot a fork in the road: You can go north where the sign (written in blood) says "Set Yourself Free," and Victory Buchanan will even goad you. You can head east through the construction site. You can backtrack to explore both sections. Likewise, both will eventually lead to a battle against Victory's henchman, Federico, and heading north will even let you get the jump on your opponents. However, it'll require decent skill sets to get past several traps. North: Victory's Playground There are loads of grotesque and macabre stuff here such as hanged corpses getting barbecued. Anyway, have a character step on the wooden plate on the right, followed by another character activating the switch on the left. Then activate the final switch so everyone can cross. Heck, if your squadmates' health pools are high enough, you can just rush through the flames and heal afterward. The next section has spiked turbines that'll wound anyone going near them. You'll find a wounded NPC. You can toss his body to the fans so you can activate a switch safely. Activate the next switches and you can pass this area without problems. The dirt path has traps (Explosives 6), a locked gate, and several containers (Lockpicking 6). You can find the Death Lance sniper rifle here as well as a grave (you won't be sure who this Cleo is until much later). Instead of opening the doors, interact with the broken valve (Mechanics 7). This will have flames spew forth and burn the growlers. You can then use the switch to reach the final area. Just remember to disarm the trap on the gate (Explosives 8). In the final area, you'll start behind Federico and his Breather troops. You can also sabotage the generator for the turrets (Mechanics 6) and pick up the Wasteland Hawk pistol from the container (Lockpicking 6). East: Construction Site The Construction Site has roughly half a dozen Breathers. There are also lots of chests for you to loot. The safe in the shed (Lockpicking 9) nets you the Purifier flamethrower and various ammo. The generator at the eastern end (Mechanics 8) lets you use the nearby terminal. This lets you raise the covering that leads to the storage area. Inside, you'll find a safe (Lockpicking 9) with several weapons, grenades, and ammo. The terminal in here, meanwhile, lets you disable the robot defenses (Nerd Stuff 6). This will let you grab all the loot from the lockers without aggroing the bots. Items include the Cold Comfort shotgun, Sawsword bladed weapon, Wasteland Hawk pistol, and Nidhogg machine gun. There's also a duffel bag next to a corpse in one of the corners. It has the Hearty Henry creepy doll. If you head up the flight of steps, you'll reach the square where you'll battle Federico. Federico and the Breathers You could pick up all the loot in the Construction Site, but it's better to start this encounter by backtracking and making your way north through the traps. The spot lets you reposition your forces behind Federico and even get the jump on his troops. Don't forget to blast the Breathers by using the explosive canisters scattered all over the arena. Once you're done, grab the Gondola Building Key. Check out one of the restrooms which has a chest (Lockpicking 9) for a few hundred bucks. Use the Gondola Building Key to enter the next area. Pick up the loot (again, lots of weapons, ammo, and grenades). Then, power-up the gondola. When you're ready, activate the lift to reach the Little Hell Resort. Little Hell The Little Hell Resort, as its bastardized name implies, has become a living hell for its guests. Lots of people are dead, and a member of the Hundred Families elite, Hardee Knox, is being roasted alive. He's actually the husband of Miriam Knox whom you met in Broadmoor Heights' church. Head inside the inn and take out the wave of Breathers waiting for you in the lounge. In the room to the right, you'll find Cpl. Riley Woodson nailed to the floor. You need First Aid 6 to patch him up. Woodson tells you that Victory Buchanan is holding several people hostage (some of these are Rangers that are part of his squad). As such, you'd want to make sure that everyone's alive before you eliminate Buchanan. Head to the corridor and, to your left, you'll spot a locked room. Check the intercom and Victory's henchman, Ash, tells you that he's got a bomb and is willing to kill the hostages. Is he bluffing? Well, let's not stick around to find out. Continue through the narrow corridor and pick up the Picture of the Gift quest item. Eliminate the robot servitors too. The Lab: The Gift and Pizepi First, let's head to the left side. The first room looks like a large lab. Inside, you'll find The Gift, another one of Victory's cronies, and none other than Pizepi Joren. The brilliant researcher from Wasteland 2 seems to be getting along with The Gift. There are several dialogue options here: Show family picture -- If you grabbed the quest item from earlier. Mechanics 7 -- Allows you to examine The Gift's wheelchair. If someone has Explosives 8, this lets you see that there's a bomb strapped to it. Disarm it now and ignore The Gift's admonishment. Kiss Ass 8 -- The Gift will let Pizepi go. Speak with Pizepi and she'll tell you about her activities and why she's buddy-buddies with The Gift. She'll try to get her bearings for a bit, though she'll still wish you well. Explore the lab to find a contraption for chemicals. You can combine chems to create a laxative for Llewellyn (one of the hostages you'll meet in a second). You can also speak with Dr. Hyde who can cure your wounds. He also sells a few medical items. The Kitchen: Gertrude the Gruesome and La Loca The room next to The Gift's lab is the kitchen. Here, you'll find Gertrude the Gruesome and several mobs. Use the nitrogen tanks to blow them up. Pick up the Freezer Key from Gertrude's corpse and open the freezer. You'll find the Ranger, La Loca, who's still eager for a fight. For now, though, she's going to eat some food while you handle Buchanan. The container here also has the Anabolic Injector accessory (+1 AP and +1 max AP). The Pool/Sauna: Estin Ward There are half a dozen Breathers in the pool area. You can funnel them back to the entrance and pick them off one by one. Pick up the Sauna Maintenance Key afterward. Use it in the backroom to spot several objects. The computer (Nerd Stuff 8) lets you drain the pool. The disemboweled corpses here have some items including a few dollars and weapon mods. The pipes (Mechanics 7), meanwhile, will let you open the door to the sauna. This will let Estin Ward (a member of Bellamy Ward's family) escape. You can tell him to slow down his breathing since he's panicking. The Laundry Room: Llewellyn Head to the right side this time. The first room at the southeast corner has a character named Llewellyn. He's wounded and you can tend to him (First Aid 7). He does say that he's got the key to the Hundred Families' vault containing untold riches. He's already swallowed it though, so you have the option to kill him and pick it up from his innards. The safe and other containers (Lockpicking 9) have the Wasteland Hawk pistol, a Note to Llewellyn, and an audio cassette related to the attack on Aspen. The Vault The vault is at the very center of this area. If you want to see what's inside, you can do any of these: Kill Llewellyn outright Use the chems in The Gift's lab to create a laxative for Llewelyn Open the vault door (Lockpicking 10) Inside the vault, you'll find loads of items such as a Composite Armor, Sawsword, Nociception Clamp (Cyborg Tech accessory), Silver Dollar Necklace (Barter +1 accessory), and the Gold-Plated Hammer. If you return to the lounge area, you can use the Gold-Plated Hammer on the odd-looking wall (near the room where you found Riley Woodson). It'll reveal a hidden room that has the Patriarch's Prototype Hammer weapon. The Guest Suites: Rook and the Reed Sisters In any case, let's head back to the main area. The room next to where you found Llewellyn has several Breathers. Take them all out to get the Guest Suites Keys. Open the room to your left and you'll see Isaac Reed's sisters. Each one is standing on a wooden plate; if one of them steps off, the place goes boom. Interact with the panel on the wall (Mechanics 8) to disable the trap. You'll save them both, so just pick up the items here (one container has the Marriage Counseling audio tape). Open the room to your right and you'll notice that a Ranger, Rook, is wounded. Tend to him (First Aid 1) and have a short conversation. The chest at the back of this room has the Ferocious Francesca Creepy Doll. Back outside the hallway, you'll notice that poison gas is spewing from the vents. You need to step on the wooden plate in the suites' main area to deactivate the gas. Then, another character has to interact with the nearby generator. This will disable the trap completely so everyone can cross. Ash's room Now that you've rescued all the hostages, head back to the narrow corridor and straight to Ash's room. Looks like this crony was bluffing all along. Open the door (Lockpicking 1) and confront him. You can choose to arrest, free, or kill him. If you continue the conversation, Hard Ass 8 will have him tell you Vic's plans when he attacks Colorado Springs. Ash will give up the Patriarch Wing Key (to reach Victory Buchanan's location). Likewise, the safe this room (Lockpicking 9) has Commando Armor. Patriarch Wing: Gwendolyn Reed The hallway to the right (past the gas vents we disabled) leads to the Patriarch Wing. Inside, you'll find Gwendolyn Reed who's quite rude. Don't forget to disable both generators next to the stairs (Mechanics 7) so the turrets won't harm you. Anyway, use the side door from Gwendolyn's room which leads to the snow-covered path. It leads to the upper floor which allows you to reposition your units before initiating the battle with the Breathers in your favor. Grab your rewards such as the Sabot rocket and Tundra sniper rifle. Important: Make sure you have a backup save after killing the Breathers and before opening the door. It's time to reach a conclusion on what to do with Victory Buchanan. Conclusion: What to do with Victory Buchanan The very insane Victory Buchanan greets you once you enter his chambers. There are multiple outcomes here based on your dialogue choices: Attack -- Will lead to Vic Buchanan getting immediately shot in the head. No boss battle, just a quick headshot. His death means you're done with this quest, but the Patriarch won't be pleased since you were asked to bring him back alive. Lie -- Vic's "scarecrow" Clarence will drop a frag grenade. Vic also ends up dead. "The Gift turned on you," "We freed the Rangers," Kiss Ass 10, or First Aid 8 - Will offer new dialogue options for you. If Vic Buchanan dies, you can pick up his stuff which includes Vic's Piece (a pistol) and the Mermaid Ornament (for your Kodiak). If you chose the other options, Vic will suggest that he should join your team. Yes, he's that insane: You can have him arrested to end the quest normally. He'll end up in Ranger HQ's brig. You can attack and kill him still. Or, if you're up for it, you can actually welcome him to the team. Note: If you recruit Victory Buchanan, you can learn more about his skills in our companions guide. In any case, pick up the rest of the loot in Vic's room. You'll find the Best Boss skill book (Leadership +1) and Polar Vortex assault rifle. Meanwhile, the bathroom has a cassette and the K-Cannon revolver. There's a toaster (Toaster Repair 7) which has the Poke Action Figure. It matches the Peek Action Figure you found in the Patriarch's Palace. If you tell the Patriarch about these, you'll get the Peek & Poke ornament for the Kodiak. Lastly, you can inspect the map at the corner of the room. These mark the locations of the Patriarch's wives: Cleo, Larra, and Livia. Remember that grave we found in Aspen's traps area? One of the Patriarch's wives is buried there. If you have Vic tag along, he'll have some extra commentary. What happens if you have Vic Buchanan with you? There are some distinct changes here, many of which will occur as you're leaving the Little Hell resort. First, if you speak with Gwendolyn Reed, Vic will just laugh and let her go. Once you enter The Gift's lab, Vic will attempt to blow her up with the bomb strapped to her wheelchair. Assuming you already removed it earlier, his efforts will be all for naught. When speaking with Ash, Victory Buchanan becomes distraught at the idea that his childhood friend could easily betray him. When you reach the lounge area, there's going to be a tense confrontation. Rook and La Loca will demand that you kill Vic Buchanan, and you'll have the option to do just that. You can also use Hard Ass 8 to make Rook back down. If you can't do either of these, Rook and La Loca will become hostile. You'll have no choice but to terminate them both. Note: You probably don't want these two characters to die since they give you the Ranger Survivor perk (+5% healing bonus) once you speak to them in Ranger HQ. Whatever happens, Cpl. Riley Woodson will congratulate you on "getting shit done" -- which is super weird considering that we just killed two of his Ranger squadmates in front of him. Note: Next, you'll have the opportunity to let Pizepi join the squad. It won't matter whether you killed Rook and La Loca or had them back down. Heck, it won't even matter if you recruited Vic Buchanan or not. Pizepi will still want to squad up. You can learn more via our companions guide. You can visit the graves of the Patriarch's other wives -- Larra and Livia -- to hear additional commentary from Vic. Larra's grave is found in Broadmoor Heights' park. Livia's grave, meanwhile, is found off to the side of Hoon Homestead. You'll get the Phase Blaster if you visit Larra's grave with Victory Buchanan tagging along. Plus, he'll have some additional comments. You'll notice special commentary from the Patriarch if you bring Vic to meet him in the Patriarch's Palace. Likewise, once you've found Liberty Buchanan, the two siblings will have a spat. Lastly, you'll get an extra dose of criticism from a very important character.
