With Capcom’s Dragon’s Dogma 2 around the corner, many things old and new have been teased. If you’re familiar with the ARPG, you already know about the monikers. However, follow along for new players such as myself who are a little puzzled by this. We can learn what a moniker is in Dragon’s Dogma 2 together.
Dragon’s Dogma 2: What is a moniker
Like other ARPGs in today’s world, Dragon’s Dogma will have you creating your character or Arisen. You can do this today since Capcom put the character creation out ahead of the game’s release. As you make your character with the robust options, at the end you get the option to name them. You can have any name you want. Then afterward, you get to pick a moniker from a preset list. Monikers behave as a parental control. Since Dragon’s Dogma 2 gives you a lot of freedom with how to name your character, players will exploit that freedom. If your name is a little too raunchy, when you load into the game, your main name gets replaced by the moniker.
Having this moniker in place can protect you from a lot of things. While the ARPG may not be an online game, you might still face issues if you have a saucy name. For example, if you stream the game on Twitch, the moniker can protect you from Twitch’s ever-changing rules. So, if you name your character blazeit420, the game may change it to the moniker you selected.
What about my Pawns?
These NPCs play a large role in your party and are controlled by AI. You can also name them. Just like naming your character, if the Pawn has an inappropriate name the moniker replaces it.
The interesting part is that Dragon’s Dogma 2 is an M-rated game, so one can assume most names can fly. But as a gamer myself, players will take things extremely far for a few laughs. Having this system in place protects the player from being outright banned.
Dragon’s Dogma 2 is a great game to take on the go with you. However, it’s unknown if you can play it on a Steam Deck.
