World of Warcraft Pets raise $1.5 million for BlueCheck Ukraine

Virtual puppies making a real-life difference.

World of Warcraft players have once again shown their community spirit and love of adorable animals, raising over $1.5 Million (USD) for BlueCheck efforts in Ukraine through the sale of two precious in-game pets: Sunny and Flurky.

The Pet Pack for Ukraine was available to purchase in-game or through the Battle.net shop between July 25 – August 29, 2023. The $20/£18 pack included Sunny, a lovable golden retriever who loves to chase her tail, and the baby Murloc, Flurky, who leaves a delightful flower trail as he shuffles behind you.

Sunny and Flurky were designed to match the Ukrainian flag, with Flurky even carrying a sunflower — Ukraine’s national flower. As much as I cherish baby Murlocs, Sunny’s excitable personality and floppy ears stole my heart the minute she was announced. Sunny is exclusive to retail World of Warcraft, while Flurky is only available in Wrath of the Lich King: Classic.

Blizzard has donated 100% of Pet Pack for Ukraine sales (minus tax) to BlueCheck, along with the extra funds players could contribute when making any other WoW-related purchase during the promotional period.

Citizens of Ukraine are seeing the benefits of this charitable collaboration as we speak with the $1.5 million funds being provided to the following BlueCheck partner organizations:

  • Project Victory — Funding a container of essential medical supplies for a Zaporizhia City hospital.
  • INSO-LVIV — Providing a grant to continue humanitarian relief in eastern Ukraine.
  • Voices of Children — Funding therapy for children with ASD (autism spectrum disorder), as well as parent group sessions, psychoeducational programs, and an international conference on the rights of children’s mental health in war.
  • Save Peace in Ukraine — Funding 180,000 ready-to-eat meals to 6,000 individuals who cannot care for themselves.
  • Starenki — Supporting approximately eight months of operating funds for Starenki, who assist elderly Ukrainians through food, social activities, and hygiene support.
  • Cash for Refugees — Providing a grant to aid Cash for Refugees to help fund families with elderly and young children who have escaped areas affected by the war.
  • Spivdiia — Funding upward of 1,500 online counseling consultations, a Mobile Service Team for Children to work with children, and food support around Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, Donetsk, Mykolaiv, and Odesa.
  • TAPS Ukraine — Providing a grant to aid in completing the construction of TAPS Ukraine Resilience Center, which offers training for 10,000 Ukrainian citizens covering trauma resolution, mental health, and emergency medical care.
  • Move Ukraine — Supplying shelter rehabilitation with permanent housing for IDPs in Kharkiv and Lviv.

Blizzard has stated that Sunny and Flurky “will not return to the Shop or game [Trading Post] in the future.” However, it’s entirely possible that Sunny’s model could be reused for a similar pet down the line, with the original article specifically mentioning “these versions of pets.”

If you missed out on the Pet Pack for Ukraine, don’t worry. Except for 2020, Blizzard has released at least one charity pet every year since 2009, raising money for organizations such as Make-A-Wish Foundation, American Red Cross, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Doctors Without Borders, and Code.org.
