I hope you enjoy doing nothing because today you will do just that in the newly-released ‘Nothing’ on Steam. Or don’t, I mean… Oh well, here goes “Nothing”.
Why play something when you can play Nothing?
Have you ever been playing a game so much that you are so connected with it that a loved one comes and asks you “What are you playing” and you respond “Nothing”? Well, you are in luck, because you can quite literally play Nothing and save yourself a heated discussion on why you are spending so much time in front of the screen!
On January 10, 2024, Pixelatto, an independent game creator, released “Nothing”, a free “psychological horror” game on Steam in which you do absolutely nothing. Well, this piece is about to get confusing.
You see, while many are trying to complete soulslike games with a Guitar Hero guitar or a Dance Dance Revolution mat, or big AAA companies aim and struggle to come up with mind-bending and genre-defining games, “Nothing” is just a plain screen with a clear instruction to press a key to begin doing nothing. Then, the game will start. As long as you don’t press any key or move your mouse – or even move a controller’s analog stick – your game will continue. If you do something, then the game’s over. After all, how dare you do something if you are playing “Nothing”?
If this is not enough for a weird day’s findings – and quite, honestly, epic – on January 12, 2023, Pixelatto dropped another game named “Something“, in which you have to do something. That is, keep pressing keys, moving the mouse, or well, you can get creative with this stuff. It is also $99 USD, so it’s quite literally everything that “Nothing” is. That would be, well, “Something”.

I just hope that we don’t get a golden mean game between both games named “I don’t know” or “Whatever”, or maybe “Schroedinger’s Game” or something like that.
