First non-gaming software arrives on Steam

Steam’s ‘Beyond Gaming’ initiative to bring a selection of creative software packages to its digital download service has officially kicked off today, with six bits of software now available to buy on the platform (with an initial 10% discount, even).

In what is being described as “just the first” wave of titles, you can pick up ArtRage Studio Pro, CameraBag 2, GameMaker: Studio, 3D-Coat, 3DMark Vantage, and 3DMark 11.

The usual Steam features are included, such as automatic updating and Steam Cloud Saves (for easy transfer of files between machines). Perhaps most interesting of all is the news that GameMaker Studio is getting full Steam Workshop integration. In effect, that means that scores of freebie games made in the program will soon be available through that portal.
