Valve Wins Case, No PreOwned Steam Games

Valve has won a landmark case in Germany, making it so that there can be no arguments to have preowned games on Steam, that could have been resold to other users.

This stems from a case handed to Steam in the country by Verbraucherzentrale Bundesverband, also known as the Federation of German Consumer Organisations, or VZBV for short. The VZBV argues that consumers should be afforded the same 1st sale doctrine right that they get on their physical games to their digital games. Simply put, the German court does not consider the 1st sale doctrine applicable to digital games as sold by Steam.

Digital resale of games could have made sweeping changes to how Steam and similar digital distribution platforms worked, even consoles. Now, Steam is reassured by the maintenance of the status quo.
