The earlier Assassin’s Creed games are losing their online services later this year, which means multiplayer is getting shut down. Fans of Assassin’s Creed plan to commemorate this with a series of community weekend sessions. A passionate fan on Reddit has organized 36 different community events for each of the games from July to August to mark an unfortunate end to a beloved series of multiplayer modes. The post only went up yesterday, but it’s already received plenty of attention from the fanbase.
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, and Assassin’s Creed 3 are all included in the event. The event take place across six weekends from July 23 to August 27, and they aren’t just limited to PC either. The console versions are getting some love too. Whether you still play the multiplayer to this day, or never gave it a go, this seems like the perfect way to experience it before it’s too late.
A sad farewell to Assassin’s Creed‘s multiplayer
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood was the first game in the series to include multiplayer. But it wasn’t just your run-of-the-mill team deathmatch. Instead, it went in a far more interesting direction. Players would have to hunt down a rotating target and stay hidden while doing so. If someone acted too suspiciously, like running around, they would be an easy target. The multiplayer was unique and used the strengths of Assassin’s Creed‘s stealth gameplay well.
Assassin’s Creed Revelations and Assassin’s Creed 3 would further develop the mode with new maps, modes, and characters. It would also go on to foster a passionate player base. Unfortunately, Ubisoft stopped including the mode in the games after Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag. Since then, fans haven’t had another true multiplayer mode in any of the games. Assassin’s Creed Unity had co-op, but it didn’t really scratch the same itch.
Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Assassin’s Creed Revelations, and Assassin’s Creed 3 will each lose their multiplayer mode on September 1. It’s worth mentioning that Assassin’s Creed 4: Black Flag‘s multiplayer mode will still be around. So you’ll still be able to play at least one of the game’s multiplayer modes after September. It’s likely the last chance to experience these modes with a large community for quite some time.
Assassin’s Creed fans do have something to look forward to later in the year, though. Ubisoft is celebrating the series’ 15th anniversary by highlighting a different game each month and releasing free content.
