Best Baldur’s Gate 3 Sorcerer build: Weapons, armor, subclasses & more

The Metamagic spellcasters.

This D&D RPG has an abundance of incredible classes, such as the Sorcerer class. But what is the best Sorcerer build in Baldur’s Gate 3?

Recommended Videos

If you’re looking to respec your Sorcerer or create one from the ground up with the best subclass, Ability Scores, weapons, armor, and more, you’re in the right place.

Baldur’s Gate 3: Best Sorcerer build

Sorcerers are innate spellcasters who can use Metamagic to enhance their spells. Although they have pretty low health, they make up for it with their incredible spellcasting. Let’s go over the best Sorcerer build you can create in Baldur’s Gate 3.

Best Sorcerer Ability Scores

Sorcerers need high Charisma since it’s their spellcasting modifier. After that, you should focus on the Constitution to make sure you can succeed Concentration checks easier, then Dexterity for your Armor Class. The other three Ability Scores don’t matter too much.

AbilityScore
Strength8
Dexterity14
Constitution16 (+1)
Intelligence9
Wisdom9
Charisma17 (+2)

Best skills for Sorcerers

Since Sorcerers have high Charisma, you’ll benefit most from having skills that go off of Charisma. When choosing which skills to be Proficient in, go for Deception, Intimidation, or Persuasion. You’ll have plenty of opportunities in BG3 to perform these checks, and having high bonuses will come in handy.

Best Background for Sorcerers

Choosing a Background can either be for roleplay purposes, or you can use it to gain Proficiency in additional skills. Here are some good Background choices:

  • Charlatan: Deception, Sleight of Hand
  • Criminal: Deception, Stealth
  • Guild Artisan: Insight, Persuasion
  • Noble: History, Persuasion

Best Sorcerer subclass in Baldur’s Gate 3

There are three great subclasses for the Sorcerer class, but overall the best one has to be Draconic Bloodline. With this subclass, you get a choice of 10 different Draconic Ancestries that pertain to a specific damage type.

LevelFeature
Level 1Draconic Resilience: When not wearing armor, your base AC is 13.
Draconic Resilience Hit Points: Your HP max increases by one per Sorcerer level.
Choose a Draconic Ancestry
Level 6Elemental Affinity: When casting a spell dealing damage of the same type as your Draconic Ancestry, add your CHA modifier to the damage.
Elemental Affinity Resistance: When casting a spell dealing damage of the same type as your Draconic Ancestry, you can spend one Sorcery Point to gain Resistance to that damage type.
Level 11Fly: Can fly at will using your movement speed.

As you can see, Draconic Bloodline gives you an HP boost, a damage boost with spells using your element, and you can gain resistance to that damage type. I also love the ability to Fly at will without having to spend a spell slot or Sorcery Point.

Best Draconic Ancestry

Choosing your Draconic Ancestry should be a roleplaying choice and should pertain to who you want your character to be. But each Ancestry comes with an element and a spell which may make this decision even harder. Here are what I think are the best Draconic Ancestries:

  • Red: Fire damage, Burning Hands spell
  • Blue: Lightning damage, Witch Bolt spell
  • White: Cold damage, Armor of Agathys spell
  • Silver: Cold damage, Feather Fall spell

These picks are solely based on the spells you gain, but I also think Fire, Lightning, and Cold Draconic Ancestries are better than Acid or Poison. This is because you get some pretty powerful Fire, Lightning, and Cold AoE spells at higher levels that can be augmented as a Red, Blue, White, or Silver Ancestry.

Best Metamagic for Sorcerers

Metamagic are the abilities you can use with Sorcery Points. Since you can only choose certain ones, it’s important to find the best ones for your Sorcerer build. Here are my preferences:

  • Distant Spell: Increases range of spell by 50%.
  • Twinned Spell: Can target one additional creature for spells that only target one.
  • Heightened Spell: Targets of your spells requiring Saving Throws have Disadvantage on their first saving throw.
  • Quickened Spell: Spell can be used as a Bonus Action instead of an Action.

Best Feats for Sorcerers in Baldur’s Gate 3

Since Sorcerers can only take three Feats, choosing the correct ones can be difficult. There are certain Feats that can really enhance your Sorcerer build, such as these ones:

  • War Caster: Gain Advantage on saving throws to maintain spell Concentration. You can also cast Shocking Grasp as a Reaction towards a target who’s moving out of melee range.
  • Spell Sniper: You learn one cantrip, and the number needed to roll a Critical Hit when attacking with a spell is reduced by one.
  • Actor: Charisma score goes up by one, to a max of 20. You also gain Expertise in Performance and Deception.
  • Durable: Your Constitution score goes up by one, to a max of 20. You also regain all HP whenever you take a Short Rest.

Sorcerers have a ton of Concentration spells, so War Caster is a must-have Feat. Spell Sniper is another good Feat for spellcasters, but I also like Actor specifically for Charisma-based classes. Durable will make sure that you stay alive in combat and regain full HP often since you don’t have the best AC.

Best weapons and armor for Sorcerers

Sorcerers can only wield a small amount of weapons, and since this Sorcerer build relies on no armor, you’ll have to stick with clothing. Not to worry though, because there are tons of weapons and armor specifically made for Sorcerers.
