Star Ocean: The Second Story R has plenty of party members you can add to your team. And while some are definitely a little better than others, there’s no definitive right answer to this. So here is what I think the best team in the game should be.
What is the best team in Star Ocean: The Second Story R
When it comes to good party members, you need to think less about a character’s overall stats and more about their specific role. For example, Rena is a healer and that’s an extremely important team member to have in Star Ocean: The Second Story R. If you want to tackle some harder areas early you’ll need a healer to see you through safely. And for raw damage output, Claude with the right gear can easily solo most enemies in the game.
This kind of balancing makes assembling a team in Star Ocean: The Second Story R a pretty smooth experience. You can just put together a party with characters you like and should have no problems getting through the game. But here is my preferred team when exploring the world of Expel.
Rena
Rena is my main character of choice in Star Ocean: The Second Story R. Her melee attacks are simple but effective. Plus her healing magic is able to get the party out of a dangerous situation with ease. Rena also has access to some offensive magic though and Gravity Crush is brilliant at smashing an enemy’s guard. Gameplay-wise you’ll always be doing something interesting with Rena and that’s why I’m a big fan of having her on the team.

Claude
The other main character is another no-brainer pick for the team in Star Ocean: The Second Story R. Claude is a sword wielder and the amount of damage he can do with his attacks can get pretty crazy. It helps that you can create his ultimate weapon partway through the game. And with that you can deal an incredible amount of damage to your foes.
Celine
Some people may disagree with me putting Celine here since she doesn’t deal a huge amount of damage in combat. But I think that having a character who specialises in offensive magic can help turn the tide in some situations. She also has a few spells that attack multiple enemies at once like Energy Arrow. This attack can freeze enemies in a stunned animation which lets melee attackers go in for the kill. I’ve had plenty of fights end a lot quicker thanks to Celine so she’s a mainstay team member for me in Star Ocean: The Second Story R.
Ashton
Ashton is another melee attacker like Claude. The main difference is that Ernest dual wields two shortswords and has his own set of special arts. His melee attacks can deal plenty of damage alongside Claude, and the two of them can easily handle most tricky situations on their own with the right setup. But if I’m being honest the real reason I love Ashton so much is the fact that he has Creepy and Weepy sitting on his shoulders. And that makes for some hilarious moments in the game. So I might be a little biased in that regard but having Ashton on your team is still a great decision. Check out our guide on how to recruit Ashton to your team.
These aren’t the only four fantastic party members in the game though. Dias, Ernest, Opera, and Chisato are all brilliant choices for your team in Star Ocean: The Second Story R. But for me, the four I listed are who I’m seeing the game through with.
