Activision got it right when they ditched the already saturated WWII era and went for a modern day battlefield. The story line was impressive, the gameplay was captive and the FPS genre hit a whole new level with the release of CoD 4. Nothing yet has quite been in the same league.
Although Mark Lamia, head of Treyarch Studios said that they were “re-defining” the WWII game and giving “players a host of new enemies that employ entirely new tactics”, most CoD fans were half expecting another modern warfare theatre or even a future war with rail guns and plasma pistols. What Activision have given us, however, is a multiplayer option..finally! Up to four players can play on the PC, PS3 and 360 platform, while a special two player option will be available for the Wii. This will allow players to rank up and unlock perks by completing challenges and earning experience points for the relevant consoles.
CoD 5: World At War will use the same engine as CoD 4 and promises to be the most chaotic and cinematically intense experience to date. As either a U.S. Marine or Russian soldier in either the South Pacific or Europe and you’ll be able to run around with a flamethrower.
The game is in development and due out this autumn. Keep your eyes out for our review and a developer interview.
