Difference between 4 star and 5 star characters in Zenless Zone Zero

Each character is different.

Zenless Zone Zero is a new gacha game from HoYoverse that borrows numerous systems from its other games. For instance, you’ll be collecting characters the same way you do in Genshin Impact or Honkai: Star Rail. Here’s the difference between 4-star and 5-star characters in Zenless Zone Zero.

Like the other gacha games HoYoverse has created, each playable character is divided into two rarity tiers: 4-stars and 5-stars. In Zenless Zone Zero, these characters are actually referred to as “A-rank” and “S-rank” units to differentiate the two, but the concept is the same. Generally, A-rank units will be worse than an S-rank unit of the same archetype. For example, A-rank DPS units will generally be worse than S-rank DPS units. A-rank units are also much more common than S-rank units, the latter being exceedingly rare.

There are also 3-star (B-rank), 4-star, and 5-star “Bangboos. Bangboos will generally take the role of a support unit in your teams, rather than a playable character. They will boost your team’s stats, provide potential buffs or other forms of utility, and work separately from your character. There aren’t any B-rank playable characters, and there likely won’t be any in the future as Genshin Impact and Honkai: Star Rail do not have 3-star characters.

If HoYoverse’s other games are to be believed, an A-rank unit does not necessarily mean they will be bad or worse than an S-rank unit. While this is usually the case, there are often A-rank/4-star characters who are just as good, if not overperform their 5-star counterparts. In other words, don’t be afraid to use or build an A-rank character! HoYoverse is generally pretty good at keeping all of their playable characters viable at a minimum, so don’t be scared of your favorite character just because they aren’t S-rank.
