Dragon’s Dogma 2: The Sorcerer’s Appraisal Grimoire Locations

The Sorcerer’s Appraisal quest is the first quest given by Myrddin, the Sorcerer Maistro. If you are wondering where to find him, you will have to travel to Checkpoint Rest Town – yes, that’s its name – and visit the house at the very top of the hill.

Entering Myrddin’s house to get the quest is a bit tricky because you will need Courtly Tunic and Courtly Breeches to give the impression that you belong to the nobility, convincing Myrddin to open up his doors to you. You can find these during the Stolen Throne quest or look for them at Comptroller’s Home, located in Vernworth’s south district.

Myrddin will instruct you to find a copy of the following grimoires to test your determination to learn the magick arts.

  • Fulminous Shield
  • Howling Blizzard
  • Nation’s Death Knell
  • Towering Earth
  • Let There Be Light

With that being said, neither the quest nor Myrddin tells you where to find these. Furthermore, you only need three of the five books to complete it. So let’s take a look at the ones that are the easiest to find: Let There Be Light, Fulminous Shield, and Towering Earth.

Let There Be Light Grimoire Location

Let There Be Light is the easiest grimoire to locate since Myrddin himself has a copy on the second floor of his house. However, if you go up the stairs and pick it up from his office, he will enter a magick-fueled frenzy and unalive you. So, the trick is getting to the second floor without using the stairs. You can use Levitate if you are a Mage, but any class can just use the ruins surrounding the house to jump straight into Myrrdin’s house balcony.

Once inside, grant the Let There Be Light copy from his desk. You can also pick up the remaining books just for the giggles. Don’t worry, he won’t hurt you this time.

Fulminous Shield Grimoire Location

Fulminous Shield is the second easiest grimoire to locate since you will only have to travel to Melve and interact with the trader located at the northernmost entrance of the town.

He will sell you the book for 5,000 gold, so make sure to bring enough money to purchase it.

Towering Earth Grimoire Location

Finally, the process of getting the Towering Earth is very simple, but you will need to find the magistrate Waldhar during the Caged Magistrate quest, which is one of the first Captain Brant quests you are given. If you haven’t completed the Caged Magistrate quest, you can still get the grimoire by talking to Waldhar again after your first interaction. However, if you have completed the quest, you will have to visit him at the library inside the vault at the Slums in Vernworth.

Just go ahead and visit Waldhar if he is there and he will give you the Towering Earth without any questions asked.

At this point, you can just go and visit Myrddin again and give you the three grimoires you have already collected. He will tell you that these will suffice but also give you the chance to collect the others that are missing. By picking the “I shall search no more” option. you can finish the quest there and then.

I would strongly recommend leveling up if you choose to go for the two remaining grimoires – Nation’s Death Knell and Howling Blizzard – since both are located in the Waterfall Cave dungeon, a very dangerous place for the untrained and ill-equipped. Either create a decent build or just stick to the three grimoires above and save you a headache – believe me, I tried.
