Amarys Elite Four battle guide- Pokemon Scarlet and Violet The Indigo Disk

Amarys has some very tough Pokémon to face and beat. Countering her team requires a careful weave of type matchups and advantages, as many of her Pokémon can counter some of their obvious weaknesses. You’ll want to focus primarily on Ground, Water, Electric, and Fire Pokémon for the fight.

Her full team is:

Alolan Dugtrio, level 78

  • Ability: Tangling Hair- Physical contact moves with this Pokémon lower the opponent’s speed. That’s most physical attacks barring ranged physical like Earthquake.
  • Item: Focus Sash- Survives a KO from full health once.
  • Earthquake: Ground type, Physical, 150 power, hits all targets.
  • Stone Edge: Rock type, Physical, 100 power, 80% accuracy, higher critical hit chance.
  • Iron Head: Steel type, Physical, 120 power, 30% chance to make the target flinch (Target can’t move if it hasn’t gone already.)
  • Sucker Punch: Dark type, Physical, 70 power. If the opponent uses an attacking move this turn, goes first. Fails otherwise.
  • Weaknesses: Ground, Water, Fighting, Fire
  • Resistances: Psychic, Bug, Dragon, Rock, Steel, Flying, Normal, Fairy
  • Immunities: Poison, Electric

This thing is nasty, and it can’t even be taken out in one hit due to Focus Sash. Whatever move it uses, it’s bound to deal a lot of damage to your Pokémon. Your best solution is a physically defensive ground type using Earthquake or Earth Power twice- they’re no-contact moves, so they won’t activate Tangling Hair. Gliscor, Donphan, Flygon, or Hippowdon could work, to name a few. A special focused Water type could also work.

Skarmory, level 78

  • Ability: Sturdy- Survives a hit from full HP.
  • Item: Rocky Helmet- Contact moves with the Pokémon take off a sixth of the opponent’s HP.
  • Stealth Rock: Scatters rocks across the arena. Every Pokémon that comes into the arena on the opponent’s side takes damage equivalent to their typing against Rock.
  • Whirlwind: Forces the target to switch out for another Pokémon.
  • Dual Wingbeat: Flying type, Physical, 60 power, 90% accuracy, hits twice in one turn.
  • Body Press: Fighting type, Physical, 80 power. User’s defense stat is factored into the damage.
  • Weaknesses: Electric, Fire
  • Resistances: Psychic, Fighting, Bug, Steel, Dragon, Fairy, Normal, Flying
  • Immunities: Poison, Ground

This thing is incredibly annoying. If you didn’t bring Taunt, Defog, or Rapid Spin to deal with Stealth Rock, you’ll have to focus your efforts on killing it immediately before it can set up Stealth Rock, otherwise, this battle will be a lot harder. Worse if it begins spamming Whirlwind and completely disrupting your flow. The Rocky Helmet is just begging you to try and fight it physically, which is a bad idea.

Using an Electric or Fire type to take it out isn’t so simple, as Dugtrio is sitting there waiting to obliterate them with Stone Edge or Earthquake. Your safest bet is to simply ignore Dugtrio for a turn and hit it with powerful Special moves from both of your Pokémon since you cannot one-hit KO it due to Sturdy.

Reuniclus, level 79

  • Ability: Magic Guard- User only takes damage from direct hits. Status effects, weather effects, entry hazards, and items cannot harm it.
  • Item: Leftovers- Restores 6% of HP every turn.
  • Energy Ball: Grass type, Special, 90 power. 10% chance to lower target’s Special Defense one stage.
  • Trick Room: Reverses the turn order for five turns- the slowest Pokémon go first.
  • Psychic: Psychic type, Special, 135 power. 10% chance to lower target’s Special Defense one stage.
  • Protect: User is shielded from all attacks this turn.
  • Weaknesses: Bug, Ghost, Dark
  • Resistances: Fighting, Psychic

For a small act of mercy, the game elected not to hate you so much as to give Reuniclus a Life Orb it cannot take damage from. This Reuniclus set is not the pure offensive nightmare I’ve used in competitive, instead taking a mixed approach. A dark type that isn’t weak to Grass should take it out just fine, but be aware Reuniclus is quite a defensive Pokémon and isn’t likely to faint in one hit.

Empoleon, level 79

  • Ability: Torrent- Water attacks have 1.5 power if the user is below two-thirds HP.
  • Item: Mystic Water- Water attacks have 1.2 power.
  • Grass Knot: Grass type, Special. Has more power the heavier the target is.
  • Hydro Pump: Water type, Special, 198 power (297 if below two-thirds of its HP), 80% accuracy.
  • Flash Cannon: Steel type, Special, 120 power, 10% chance to lower target’s Special Defense by one stage.
  • Ice Beam: Ice type, Special, 90 power, 10% chance to freeze the target.
  • Weaknesses: Ground, Fighting, Electric
  • Resistances: Flying, Fairy, Normal, Bug, Steel, Dragon, Water, Ice, Psychic, Rock
  • Immunities: Poison

Why are all these Unovan students so allergic to their regional starters? Nonetheless, Empoleon is a solid defensive Pokémon, but its offense is stacked to Water with the combination of Torrent and Mystic Water on Hydro Pump. Fighting or Electric can take it down in a hit or two; consider a fast and hard-hitting member of either, or even something like Magnezone that can wall everything but Hydro Pump.

Scizor, level 79

  • Ability: Technician- All moves with 60 power or less have their power multiplied by 1.5.
  • Item: Occa Berry- Weakens damage from a supereffective Fire type move.
  • Aerial Ace: Flying type, Physical, 90 power.
  • Bullet Punch: Steel type, Physical, 90 power, moves first regardless of speed.
  • Trailblaze: Grass type, Physical, 75 power, raises the Speed of the user one stage.
  • Pounce: Bug type, Physical, 113 power, lowers target’s Speed by one.
  • Weaknesses: Fire (4x)
  • Resistances: Normal, Bug, Steel, Grass, Psychic, Ice, Dragon, Fairy
  • Immunities: Poison

Scizor is an objective menace to society. Fortunately, a strong Fire type can one-hit KO it through Occa berry and walls most of its moveset.

Metagross, level 80

  • Ability: Clear Body- Stats cannot be lowered.
  • Item: Expert Belt- Supereffective moves have 1.2 power.
  • Zen Headbutt: Psychic type, Physical, 80 power, 90% accuracy, 20% chance to flinch the target.
  • Ice Punch: Ice type, Physical, 75 power, 10% chance to freeze the target,
  • Hard Press: Steel type, Physical, power increases the closer the target is to full HP.
  • Brick Break: Fighting type, Physical, 75 power, destroys Light Screen, Aurora Veil, and Reflect.
  • Weaknesses: Ground, Fighting, Fire
  • Resistances: Steel, Grass, Normal, Bug, Psychic, Dragon, Fairy, Ice, Flying, Rock
  • Immunities: Poison

Metagross terastallizes to Steel upon being sent out. This makes it less of a problem than it would be if it didn’t. Now Zen Headbutt is weaker. Hard Press is the biggest threat in this moveset, able to take down most Pokémon that don’t resist steel instantly. Of its weaknesses, your best bet is to counter it with Fire. Armarouge is the best direct counter to Metagross, as nothing it can do will hit Amarouge hard.

That’s how to beat Amarys from the Elite Four in Pokemon Scarlet and Violet The Indigo Disk. Beating her gives you the TM for Hard Press, a physical Steel move with perfect accuracy, and 10 base PP dealing more power as the target has more HP. This is a unique and intriguing addition to Steel’s lineup of moves, though whether it’s more useful than its set-powered counterparts remains to be seen.
