How to fish in Moonstone Island

Spirits and alchemy? No, the fishing life's for me.

As Moonstone Island is a cozy farming and magic game, it is obligated to have a way to fish. And there are certain classes of players who beeline immediately for fishing in any game of this genre. Are you one of them? Here’s how to fish in Moonstone Island.

Moonstone Island fishing tutorial

Moonstone Island is not one of the games that gives you the fishing rod off the bat. You will need to save up the gold and buy it. Fortunately, it is not exactly expensive to get a basic fishing rod. The store you need is right from the town at the beach, run by Tobin and easily identified by the giant golden fish on top of it.

Come to the store during open hours, talk to Tobin, and open his shop. The fishing rod is the first item available for sale, sold for 200 gold.

The fishing rod then goes into your tools (Q) for future use.

Now, as usual, you need to find a body of water, which you can do just outside on the beach if you so desire. Have the rod selected and then hold down the left mouse click. A bunch of dots representing your line will bounce back and forth. Release at the distance you want your rod to land in. Beyond that, just wait. Your character will get a red exclamation mark over their head. Be quick about left-clicking when you see it, as the window is tight and unforgiving.

Then unless you caught a piece of trash, be ready for the reeling-in phase of the minigame. You will see a circle pop up with a fish swimming around. You have to drag the circle toward the fish and try to keep it on the fish as it moves around until the green meter fills up entirely to full, at which point you reel it in. If you let the meter run out, you lose the fish.

Overall, this puts Moonstone Island’s fishing mechanics as easier than Stardew Valley’s, but somewhere in the middle in terms of complexity and ease. But now, we can catch some fish!
