Diablo 4 PTR: How to fix Masterwork Invalid Item error message

With the new Tempering and Masterworking system coming to Season 4 of Diablo 4, there are a lot of new mechanics to understand. Players have been receiving a strange message after attempting to Masterwork some items, yet the game does not explain the problem. You can fix this Masterwork Invalid Item error by adding two Tempering affixes before Masterworking an item.

As announced in this PSA Reddit post, you can only Masterwork an item if you have two Tempering affixes on the item from two separate categories. If you attempt to Masterwork an item with only one Tempering affix on it, you’ll receive this strange error that says “!!Missing!!-4116:Masterwork_InvalidItem”.

This is presumably just a placeholder error message for the PTR, and once Season 4 arrives on May 14 we may see a proper error message explaining what you’re doing wrong. To properly Masterwork an item, bring it to the Tempering menu through a Blacksmith. Place the item down and check for how many categories are available to place on your item.

How to Temper and Masterwork items

Ensure you’ve learned all of the Temper Manuals the game gave you after you boosted to level 100 (and learn any new Temper Manuals you collect). All gear items should have the ability to gain a Tempering affix from two separate categories. For example, your weapon can get an affix from the Weapons or Offensive category, while your helmet can get Defensive and Utility.

After you’ve spent the materials and added two Tempering affixes to your item, head to the Masterwork tab and you can now place your item in the slot. You’ll then see what the next rank is for your item (there are 12 in total), as well as the success chance and how much of an increase your affixes will receive.

You’ll need to use up three different materials, which are Rawhide, Veiled Crystals, and Obducite. From ranks five to eight, instead of Obducite you’ll need Ingolith, then from ranks nine to 12 you’ll need Neathiron. Obducite, Ingolith, and Neathiron can all be acquired from The Pit.

Once you have the necessary materials and the required gold you can finally Masterwork your Tempered item! Just remember that all items require two Tempered affixes before you can Masterwork them. Now you can experience everything that the PTR has to offer, especially all the new Helltide event changes.
