If you’ve been paying attention to the Epic Games Store this week, you’ll know by now that it’s giving away a new free game every 24 hours until we hit the new year. Today is the third day of the “15 days of free games in December” event or whatever the Epic Games Store is calling it. All we know is we like free, and The Long Dark is today’s offering.
The Long Dark is a single player survival adventure that takes place in the Canadian wilderness. It leans heavily into the theme of the unknown frontier and subsequently focuses on a lot of exploring. Things aren’t easy in those kinds of temperatures though, so you’ll need to manage your vitality lest you freeze to death in no time.
Big chillin long time
This game launched back in 2014, but the devs are surprisingly still hard at work providing regular updates. That explains the very positive user reviews and undoubtedly makes this title a great play for burning some time over the winter break. You can jump into the story mode and experience all of the Wintermute episodes that are part of an ongoing expansion or test your management skills in survival mode.
Once you get the hang of things and want to try some gameplay with a twist, you can even jump into some challenges. One particular challenge that stands out is the Escape the Darkwalker, which featured last Halloween and threw in some horror. It sounds like a fan favorite, and there’s more where that came from.
As far as performance, The Long Dark should be a fairly manageable experience. This is an older title with a minimalist art style, so the open world shouldn’t be too taxing on your rig.
