Valorant Sunset map guide: overview, best agents, and more

Complex or easy?

With the release of Episode 7 Act 2, Sunset joins the ever-growing map pool of Valorant as the 10th map of the game. As always, learning a new map and adapting to it has been a headache for most of the Valorant players. Most players have almost zero time to prepare for the map as Riot added Sunset to the competitive map pool after removing Pearl and Fracture in patch 7.04. If you are starting the new act or are tired of dodging Sunset in the competitive queues, this guide will give you a complete overview of how to approach the latest Valorant map.

Valorant: Sunset Map Overview

Sunset follows the traditional map layout of Valorant, with two spike sites on two corners of the map and almost equidistant from the spawns. A mid area extends from the spawns and connects the two sites. Fortunately, this map has no weird mechanics like zipline or teleporter. But, it has one breakable door near the market in B site, very similar to that of Ascent.

From a strategic point of view, Sunset is a slightly defender-favored map, as there are a lot of angles to cover. Both spike sites are very compact and have a lot of extra structures, giving the defenders enough space to hold and tackle any attack.

From the attacker’s point of view, approaching both sites of Sunset requires a systematic and slow approach. There are a lot of cubbies on all sides of the map; thus, there are a lot of angles to clear for the attackers. Also, the post-plant scenarios might get a little messy for the attackers, as there are multiple points of entry to the site. So, losing two or three members before the plant might create a huge disadvantage for them.

The most crucial part of your planning with this map should include the mid-area of Sunset. Even though the spike sites are narrow and compact, the mid area holds a lot of ground, which can be crucial for your team to take map control.

From the attacker side spawn, the mid area will give you access to both sites from various points. Mid Courtyard connects A and B sites through Mid Tiles and B Market, respectively. Getting into B Market successfully can give a hard time to the defenders at B site as you can easily get access to the site through Market or B Boba (B backside).

However, the mid-top is a good point for the defenders to tackle the mid-push. The mid-top player can hold off the attacking angles with a pair defending B Market. But, as Sunset has too many connecting areas, the Mid Tiles again could give the defenders some trouble, as clearing Top and Market is pretty easy from this area.

The B spike site might favor the attackers a bit. But the A site is heavily defender-sided. Only one direct entry point through A Lobby will make it hard for the attackers to enter the site directly. In order to come to this site from mid, one has to pass through B Lobby> B Bottom> Mid Tiles and then reach A. It might give the defenders ample time to call in rotation and hold off the attacks.

Overall, the Sunset map might be very confusing in the beginning due to a lot of entry points and angles. Even though a specific site might help the attackers, the overall map is still defender-friendly due to the vast number of angles to clear.

Best agents to pick in Sunset

Cypher

Cypher has a solid kit, with almost all his abilities focusing on defending a certain site. Till now, we have seen some impressive Cypher setups by many players, giving this agent the power to hold off a site all by himself. Making the best use of his kit, Cypher can be used as the best Sentinel in Sunset.

Cypher’s Trapwires can hold off the entry points of both of the sites. Moreover, his Spycam can be used in many creative ways to watch incoming flanks. When used perfectly, his Cyber Cage can block off the defender’s sight in the mid area, giving the team a smooth entry to any of the sites while attacking.

Harbor

As Pearl has been taken out of the competitive map pool with the latest patch, Sunset might now be one of the best maps to use the latest Controller agent of Valorant, Harbor. Harbor’s ability to bend his Cascade wall makes him unique as a Controller. This feature can be used perfectly to block extra angles in Sunset.

From the defender’s side, Harbor can block multiple pushing angles of the attackers with his Cascade. Harbor can push a bit deep from A site and block both A Main and Mid Tiles with Cascade. On the other hand, this ability can work the best to block the attackers from pushing B Main or B Market, leaving most of the concentration of the defenders at mid. Harbor’s Ultimate Ability Reckoning is the perfect fit for any retake or entry situations at any of the sites of Sunset.

Viper

Viper is one of the best Controllers of Valorant, as this poison lady can be useful in almost all of the maps in this game. Viper’s Toxic Screen can cut off a lot of angles for the enemies to push, weakening them if they try to push through it. When utilized at the perfect angles, the Toxic Screen itself can get your team a lot of free kills.

Moreover, Viper can be used the best in post-plant scenarios for the attackers. If Viper can position herself properly in the B Main area after the plant is done, she can hold off the defuse by herself using her Poison Cloud and Snake Bites. Most importantly, Viper’s Pit will come in handy for the defenders to hold a site.

Neon

Neon might be famous in social media for her flashy plays and unique ability usages, but this Duelist is the best Duelist to pick for Sunset. Sunset has a lot of long-sight angles, where players will need to engage with the enemies in long-ranged battles. This scenario gives Neon the perfect scope to use her signature ability, High Gear.

Moreover, with a lot of walls and alleys leading to different areas of the map, Neon can be used perfectly to reach a site faster. In retake situations, this Duelist can also act as a perfect flank, making it hard for the opponents to hit her due to the presence of numerous structures and hiding locations throughout the map.

Skye

In the upper ranks, Skye is the most used Initiator of the game. With a high pick rate, this agent is by far the best agent to pick if you want to clear hard angles for your team. With much scope to show creative plays, Skye can work perfectly to clear close angles, too.

Skye is the best agent to use to clear these angles in a map like Sunset, where there are more hard angles than most other maps. Skye’s Guiding Lights can create the perfect opening for the attackers to enter the site, as well as help the defenders gather info the most.

Her Trailblazer also adds more value to her kit, as this ability can effectively clear the entry point for the duelists of the team to push in. Needless to say, Skye’s healing ability by using Regrowth makes her a lot more versatile.
