Starfield is brimming with characters, stories, and mysteries for you to interact with at your own leisure. However, one such character might be sitting on your mind, with no explanation in sight. The Mysterious Captain. She will drop in out of nowhere as you travel from planet to planet. She’ll hail you and communicate with you, but she won’t provide you with anything concrete aside from the fantastic items that she sells. If you must know who this Mysterious Captain is in Starfield, then look no further.
The Mysterious Captain
The Mysterious Captain turns out to be one of the few Starborn in Starfield. This explains her cryptic and strange dialogue to you and explains why she prefers to watch by the sidelines. Her vagueness and avoidance of your questions was her way of keeping your destination — becoming a Starborn yourself — a secret. The first time you meet her, she’ll be hopping around, exploring the galaxy whilst being infuriatingly cryptic. Upon meeting her again, she will be a humble trader. The constant violence in a Starborn’s life apparently grew tiresome, and she preferred to set up shop.
It is well worth exhausting all dialogue options and purchasing her items as she drops in on you on her terms, because who knows when you’ll get to see her again. You cannot actively seek out the trading Starborn but will encounter her randomly in space. So whenever you see her, interact with her!
You can hop from planet to planet yourself in hopes of the RNG lining up perfectly if you really want to meet her, but the chances are slim enough for it not to be worth the effort.
And don’t worry, you can’t engage in hostilities with Mysterious Captain no matter what you do, so don’t worry about that.

Who are the Starborn in Starfield?
If you’re confused, the Starborn are those that have passed through the Unity in the center of the galaxy. The Unity is even more mysterious than the Mysterious Captain and acts as your gateway into New Game Plus. Passing through the Unity will reset your progress, but will make you stronger, as it did for all the other Starborn. Narratively, this is you passing into another universe, where things are ever so slightly different. Only your memories will be retained.
