It appears that the extra time needed to make Doom Eternal shine is about to pay off big time for id Software. It’s a much bigger game than anyone could have anticipated.
In a recent interview with GameSpot, creative director Hugo Martin explained just how much time it takes for players to clear its story mode. And that’s before you try tackling it on a higher difficulty.
Just how monstrous a game is Doom Eternal?
The team is “hell-bent” on entertaining players from “beginning to end,” Martin explained. “This is a 22-plus hour game.”
And to give you an idea of just how it fares compared to the 2016 Doom, he provided further details. “You’ve seen more in the first two to three levels in this game than you do in the entire Doom (2016), without question.”
That said, players shouldn’t go feeling too over-confident right away, as it’s all about Doom Eternal‘s pacing. Martin explained that the “fun is mastering it” and what the game has to throw at you. In fact, you’ll have to earn the “power fantasy,” as he puts it.
But then comes the crucial third act, in which the game will say, “Okay, let’s see how you do” with your skills. Martin wouldn’t go into further detail, but let’s just say you’re going to have a lot thrown at you.
Along with tearing demon enemies apart, Doom Eternal will also have platforming, puzzles to solve, and exploration for hidden secrets. That should add up to 22 hours rather nicely, or maybe even go beyond that.
