Fall Guys developer gets bought by Epic Games

Fortnite meets Fall Guys.

Epic Games and Tonic Games Group, parent company of Mediatonic, are joining forces. The two studios announced today that Epic has purchased Mediatonic, a.k.a. the developer behind the ever-popular Fall Guys. The partnership is huge for these major companies — so big that Mediatonic’s announcement temporarily crashed its website. However, Mediatonic assured that Fall Guys will remain the same chaotic fun it’s always been.

In a blog post on Epic’s website, Tonic Games CEO Dave Bailey explained that the companies share the same goals. “With Epic, we feel like we have found a home that was made for us. They share our mission to build and support games that have a positive impact, empower others and stand the test of time and we couldn’t be more excited to be joining forces with their team,” he said.

Likewise, Epic CEO Tim Sweeney said that both Tonic Games and Epic are “invested in building the metaverse.” Together, Epic and Mediatonic plan to create brand new content and new gamer experiences.

Here’s what Epic’s Mediatonic purchase means for Fall Guys

In addition to celebrating the new family, Mediatonic shared what it means for the future of Fall Guys. The short answer? Nothing, really. With the help of Epic Games, Mediatonic wants to improve Fall Guys more than it could have as an independent studio. Gameplay will not change, and the battle royale will continue to receive updates with new content and costumes. Mediatonic also wants to incorporate some of Fortnite and Rocket League‘s features, such as “account systems, cross-play, [and] squad vs squad modes.” As far as free-to-play goes, there’s no Fall Guys news — right now.

Basically, Fall Guys will still be everything you know and love, but with more inspiration from Epic Games. Season 3.5 is still going in full force. However, Fall Guys did recently tease a futuristic theme for the upcoming Season 4. There’s no word on when the new season will kick off.
