One of the most anticipated games coming out of Blizzard is easily Diablo II: Resurrected. Fans have requested an HD update for Diablo II for years, and they got their wish this year at BlizzCon 2021. The classic game will receive a full HD update, along with other tweaks and modern conveniences. Players even got to try the game out this past week with a limited-time alpha. However, it was quickly discovered that an old mod for the original game would let players use other classes not in the Diablo II: Resurrected alpha.
The reason is simple. Diablo II: Resurrected is very similar to the base game, which is why you can transfer older saves. In fact, some old mods from the original Diablo II apparently work in Resurrected. The mod in question here is a Hero Editor mod, which has been around for some years now. Basically, when you make your character, you use the mode to tell the game that they are a different class than what they actually are. When your character loads in, they will be that chosen class no matter what.
Using this old mod, players were able to gain access to four other classes that were not supposed to be playable in the alpha. Diablo II: Resurrected’s alpha only included the Barbarian, Amazon, and Sorceress right out of the gate. This mod, however, let players also gain access to the Necromancer, Paladin, Assassin, and Druid. A reddit post from r/Diablo goes into more detail, while showing off the Necromancer. Blizzard did say that it planned to have full mod support for the game, but I don’t think this is quite what the developers intended.
Old habits die hard
Intrepid players were even able to unearth an old item duplication glitch for use in the alpha. Now, before anyone gets too concerned (or excited), it’s important to remember that this is still the alpha of the game. It remains to be seen whether any of these old mods or glitches will remain (or be allowed) in the final game. For something like the item duplication glitch though, it’s probably a safe bet that Blizzard will patch out the exploit.
Despite this hiccup, impressions of this new version seem to be mostly positive. After the absolute disaster that was Warcraft III: Reforged, Blizzard needs all the good press it can get. While Diablo II: Resurrected doesn’t have a firm release date yet, it is currently scheduled to be released sometime this year before December 2021.
