Mattel and developer Milestone’s Hot Wheels Unleashed races onto all platforms today. Those who pre-ordered the new Ultimate Stunt Edition of the new arcade racer can now download and get in on the action before everybody else.
Hot Wheels Unleashed features a variety of different vehicle models based on many different properties, including classic designs like the Twin Mill, and even models of licensed vehicles from manufacturers like Audi, Dodge, Chevrolet, and more. In addition to this, the game features several rollercoaster-style tracks that bend, weave, and loop their way through five detailed environments: College Campus, Skatepark, Garage, Basement and Skyscraper. Thanks to the early access being offered to pre-order customers, players can make use of the community tools — such as the track builder and livery editor — ahead of time. That way, newcomers who play the game after its official launch should already have a decent stock of user content to enjoy.

Powered by Unreal Engine tech, Hot Wheels Unleashed seeks to bring the same high-octane experience that millions around the world have enjoyed as toys, to the video game world. This is the first full-on Hot Wheels game in recent history, as the franchise has mainly featured as DLC for existing games, such as Forza Horizon 4 and Rocket League.
A few months ago, we took an early look at a preview build of the game where we concluded that it did a good job at capturing the wild and crazy racing experience that one would expect from a Hot Wheels product. However, we’ve also gone hands on with the final product since, and it doesn’t quite live up to expectations. There’s enjoyable Hot Wheels action hidden in here, but some questionable design choices have led to an experience that contains mixed results.
